Spokane Day 6, Sasquan Day 4

Aug 23, 2015 12:32

I briefly attended the Business meeting to see the details of the 75th Worldcon that will be in Helsenki in 2017.  The guests of honor are John-Henri Holmberg, Nalo Hopkinson, Johanna Sinisalo, Claire Wendling and Walter Jon Williams.  It will be in early August 2017.

I then checkout Guest of Honor Brad Foster's panel on his art.  There was some interesting stuff on his process.  I have always been fond of his art as it shows up in con publications.  This is a man who loves to draw.

Then I attended a panel about Astronaut Guest of Honor Dr. Kjell Lindgren.  It was a series of videos describing his training and preparation for his mission to the International Space Station.  It was hosted by a NASA official Jenny Knotts.  She did a great job explaining the films.

I bought several Japanese SF novels to discuss at next year's Anime Festival Orlando (hopefully).

Then I left for the Danny Lieberman Worldcon Memorial Bicycle Ride. I went and rented a pretty good hybrid bicycle.  I went with Kathi Overton, Brenda Clough, and a gentleman I whose name I did not catch.  I really liked Danny. He tried to convince me that I could ride a bike in Australia without a helmet.  We did part of the Centennial Trail.  I hope have pictures later. Unfortunately, I had to leave early for Hugo rehearsals.

I went backstage to INB, the place next to the convention center, where the Hugo would be held.  The main thing was to learn how to present Hugo on stage and hand it off to the presenters.

Next I attended Vonda McIntyre's Guest of Honor's Interview. It was opened by the trailer to The Moon and the Sun, a film based on her Nebula winning novel.  The Interviewed covered McIntyre's career and major works including her Star Trek novels. McIntyre is on the right.

Then some more Hugo rehearsal. Then going back getting showered, shave and putting on my suit. As always I went for 1980s NBC David Letterman (suit with running shoes/sneakers).  Hugo managers told me to attend the pre Hugos reception so we had a full stomach.  I met Jay Lake's family and had a talk about the Hugos.  I also got to speak with David Gerrold, Leslie Turek, and Tom Smith.  Then it was on to the big event.

There was one tense moment back stage but it was resolved.  I got to carry out the Best Fanzine Hugo, Related Work, Novel.  It was a blast.  We had a Dalek on stage for reading the nominees for Best Dramatic Presentation. I got to high five David Gerrold.  I got to see some stuff I voted for win. Thanks to Pablo Vazquez, Megan Frank,Guy Consolmagno, Jodi Dashoff, Bridget Campbell, Crystal Huff (see below, the order I used was correct)

And here is my annual picture with a Hugo, I am holding Ms. Marvel Hugo.

I went to the press office and reviewed the Hugo results, and did a little party hopping.
