American national character exemplifies how representatives
of one civilization and of one mentality can be people of different
ethnicities. Hence, genes do not foreordain cultural self-orientation. In
theory, Chinese could be bearers of the Western civilization and Romano-Germans
- of the Chinese one. Therefore, were I raised in China, I would be a bearer of
the Chinese culture, etc. So one should imagine himself playing different parts
on the stage of life and look for something that would remain permanent in him -
no matter what his role is.
