Bad

Celebrities have got some nerve. Just because they're ogled by readers of People magazine and viewers of E! Entertainment Television, they think they've got some special license to ruin the lives of children. Namely the lives of their own children ( Read more... )

Just call me Cottonball Malone...I knew there had to be somebody else out there who was thinking those names were terrible and not unique and beautiful.

Not only do I have a distaste for the non-name names, I also get peeved when I see "unique" variations on common names. Don't get me wrong, a few are fine, but the whole trend has gotten out of hand. Ashley spelled 'Ashlee' only makes its unfortunate name-bearer look like a phonetically inclined ignoramus.

But then Ashleigh, Ashli, and Ashlie are sure-fire indicators of a truly unique individual. A girl in my YA lit class gave a book report on one of those nauseating-looking teen paperbacks called Driver's Ed. In aforementioned book, the aging driver's ed instructor mumbles to himself about how radical non-conformist names are doled out to kids that are starting to look more and more alike. Frankly all of those little badly bleached blonds looks alike to me too, be they Janes, Britneys, McKennas, Rainbow Dews;-), or Apples. PS- Surnames used as given names are not my favorite either. If there are little girls branded McKenzie running around, why not McCormick?

There are no girls named McCormick because we McCormicks don't allow it. It's Amendment XVII of the constitution of the United Federation of McCormicks. Those parents petitioned and we responded - NO!

Or so says Duncan McCloud (and I won't discuss that combination of sounds or their barer). A-S-H-L-E-Y is truly the only way to go. Other spellings are deeply troubling, as if the name was being pulled toward the cheerleader/stripper/dragqueen vortex lurking somewhere out there ...

What's so wrong with an athletic, sex-positive, transgendered person sharing a variant of your name? You should be honored.
