A skip is a bit like a dumpster only with no lid and you pay the company to deliver the empty one and then take away and dispose - oh at these prices it had better be legally - of the crap you throw out. However should you be tempted do try and go for a company who deliver and take away the same day or else your half empty skip will transform mystically into an overflowing pile of mattresses and couches during the night, and under littering laws you are responsible for disposing of this mess. Joy! (There is something powerfully tempting about a half empty skip. Back in our old house we would often stalk the neighbourhood for such a thing when we had old bedding to get rid of - which is horribly bulky in a small domestic bin but squashes down quite well under builders' rubble and the like.)
Our neighbours often had skips when they were clearing out the old rental flats behind us. The amazing thing was that they would throw out stuff and then other people would come and take it away. One guy brought a van to haul away 6 mattresses - not new, nice or fresh ones either. God! I felt sorry for his tenants.
