On Vox: Nara

Sunday? I think it was (see, this is a good sign I'm on vacation!) we had our first totally rainy day. That was fine, as it gave me a chance to do some shopping. I don't always enjoy shopping, but it's a goldmine here. I bought two gorgeous silk obi that I will treasure, in addition to a small heap of cotton fabric prints that I could never find in the US. I can't wait to decide what to do with them!

I also bought a woodblock print of the hare and the moon that I will get framed as soon as we return- I love it! There is something about this place that makes me want to go home, through out anything even slightly junky we own, and redecorate with a simple Asian aesthetic.

Yesterday we went out to Nara. There were tons of gorgeous temple buildings, and the largest daibutsu I've seen. You can't tell from the photo, but it's the largest wood building in Japan, stories high, and is only 2/3 the size of the original.

The grounds were really beautiful, and covered with deer. Al kept referring to them as the rats of Nara. I bought some deer food and got mobbed by a pack of them! I'd be feeding one, and several others would bite me on the leg, or pull my shirt!

You can see more pictures of Nara and Horyugi on Al's blog.
