Summary: Luke has made a deal with Reid to stay away from him at the hospital, but it’s not working and they end up spending more time together.
A/N: I’ve decided to continue with this one, the next parts have a lot of history but I’m adding a few new characters and changing some of the events (for the better LOL), I hope you enjoy my take on the beginning of LURE.J A big shout out to lemondrop for helping me with my focus…I now know where it’s going to end so enjoy the journey
Part VI
A crash on the patio startled Luke and he went out to find Noah fumbling around on his hands and knees.
“Noah, what’s wrong?” Luke asked anxiously trying to help Noah up.
“I’m fine Luke, I just dropped my cane,” Noah told him impatiently, brushing Luke’s hands away.
“Here it is,” Luke said handing it to him, “Why are you still here? I thought that you left with Dr. Oliver,” Luke questioned as anger started to bubble up.
“I’m not going to Dallas, and before you say it neither is Dr. Oliver,” Noah began to explain.
“What?” Luke asked in confusion.
Noah told Luke about Henry’s donation to the hospital and Reid’s agreement to stay and run the new wing.
“That’s great news Noah, now you can move back in,” Luke said excited by the news, “Don’t worry I’ll keep my distance from Dr. Oliver.”
“No Luke, I’m still planning to move in with Maddie, I still need to learn to do things on my own without you helping me all of the time,” Noah explained standing back from Luke.
“I’ll not hover, I promise,” Luke pleaded with Noah.
“You just picked up my cane Luke, I need to learn to do things on my own,” Noah told Luke again firmly, his hands gripping and loosening at the top of his cane.
“Why? I can be with you Noah. Why do want to be by yourself? We’re supposed to be a couple” Luke spluttered he was losing it and losing Noah, this was worse than Noah leaving for Dallas.
“I need to be able to do things on my own Luke, in case the surgery doesn’t work,” Noah tried again, knowing he was selfish but not wanting Luke constantly helping.
Luke let out a long stuttering breath, “I thought we were supposed to do this together,” he put his hands on his face and continued tears in his eyes, “I can’t do this anymore Noah, you can’t give me what I need and you won’t let me give you what you need.”
“What are you saying Luke?” Noah was shocked and relieved at the same time.
“This isn’t working Noah, and it hasn’t for a long time, maybe even before the accident, I love you but I can’t do this anymore,” he sighed the tears now streaming down his face as the cab honked and Noah hugged him goodbye.
As Luke heard the car door slam and then drive away he felt sad, relieved and anxious, he wasn’t sure how he was going to deal with Dr. Oliver the next time he saw him now that he and Noah had broken up.
Luke groaned as he turned and faced Dr. Oliver the following morning, “Why was he here at the Lakeview?” he thought.
“Mr. Snyder why do you seem to be wherever I am?” Reid inquired snidely to him.
“Don’t flatter yourself, actually I think you’re stalking me, now that you’re staying in Oakdale we may be seeing each other more often whether we like it or not,” Luke replied in exasperation.
“Great news travels fast, are you now going to tell me I’m a sell-out?” Reid questioned, he hadn’t expected to see Luke so soon and was taken off guard seeing the younger man.
“You know I can’t do this, see ya Dr. Oliver,” Luke told him heading to the door and seeing a taller man walk up to Dr. Oliver, he stopped as he heard the man address Reid.
“Are you Dr. Reid Oliver?” the man asked.
“Who want’s to know?” Reid replied haughtily.
“You don’t remember me do you?” the man said angrily, “Well I remember you, you son of a bitch, you murdered my Annie!!”
Before Reid could respond the man punched him in the face, Reid fell to the floor landing on a chair as the man punched him in the stomach and kicked him in the side as Reid turned into the chair to protect his hands. Reid didn’t try to defend himself and Luke ran over pulling the man off of him.
“Do you feel better now?” Reid asked breathlessly, his mouth bleeding a little and clutching his side.
“I thought if I made you hurt I’d feel better but nothing will bring my Annie back,” he replied wiping a hand across his face before he left.
“Dr. Oliver, are you okay?” Luke asked anxiously going to Reid’s side and helping him up.
“Leave me alone Mr. Snyder,” Reid told him clutching his side and walking out of the Lakeview.
Luke ran to catch up to him, grabbing him on the shoulder and turning him around, “But what was that about, did you really murder his daughter?” Luke asked in wonder.
“No Mr. Snyder, Mr. Judd is a grieving father I gave his daughter another year of life but now she’s gone and he wants someone to blame,” Reid explained dabbing under his eye.
“I don’t understand if you gave his daughter another year why is he still so angry?” Luke tried to understand.
“Just forget about it Mr. Snyder,” Reid told him and walked away and went to the hospital to get an ice pack.
One of the nurses asked him if he was okay and he told her to leave him alone he was fine and go pretend to help someone else, he sighed to himself, “You’re such an asshole Oliver,” and found himself going to Luke’s house.
He wasn’t sure why but he felt he needed to explain things to Luke, he hated the look in Luke’s eyes when Mr. Judd accused him of murdering his daughter.
Luke was shocked to find Reid at his mom’s house his eye was bruising after the punch from Mr. Judd.
“What do you want Dr. Oliver?” Luke asked tightly confused with Reid on his doorstep.
“Can I come in?” Reid asked and walked in, “This wasn’t quite what I expected,” Reid told Luke in surprise as he entered the very comfy living room.
“Were you expecting a butler to answer the door, Dr. Oliver?” Luke teased, “We’re not quite like that.”
“I just wanted to make sure that you don’t tell anyone about Mr. Judd’s accusations, it wouldn’t be good for Memorial’s reputation,” Reid explained hurriedly not meeting Luke’s eyes.
Luke stood his arms crossed and finally said, “Tell me what happened to that man’s daughter and then I’ll decide whether it’s worth telling Bob.”
Reid explained Annie’s case to Luke, a six year old with a brain tumor, he had operated and removed as much as he could and gave her another year of life. Unfortunately nothing could be done to save her next time around the disease had progressed too far.
Luke thanked Reid for telling him the truth, “I think I know why you didn’t fight back, I think you felt you deserved to be punished by Mr. Judd,” he added.
“You don’t know anything about me Mr. Snyder, I tried to save her life and I couldn’t, end of story,” Reid told Luke firmly.
“Yeah, but I think you’re angry because you failed and you can’t handle failure,” Luke continued.
“Well good for you then, since I’ll be cracking open your boyfriends skull soon,” Reid taunted Luke moving towards him.
“Well here’s a news flash for you, not that it’s any of your business but Noah is no longer my boyfriend we’ve broken-up,” Luke threw into Reid’s face, wondering why this man could make him so angry and careless, he hadn’t planned on telling Reid about he break up.
“I’m not surprised the way you smothered him all the time he’s a grown man you don’t need to baby him,” Reid told Luke.
“You don’t know anything about Noah and I,” Luke spluttered he was still feeling so raw about his feelings for Noah and the way things ended.
“I know he couldn’t wait to keep you away when I suggested it,” Reid told Luke knowing how it would make Luke feel, but he couldn’t stop himself from being an asshole.
Luke had had enough and grabbed Reid by the collar of his jacket, Reid grabbed Luke’s hands and time stopped the tension was thick and Luke could feel his body respond. He licked his lips and almost leaned forward but Reid responded first pushing him away.
“I’ve had enough of being pushed around today Mr. Snyder, now back-off,” Reid told him, he was breathing heavily but he knew better this time, he wasn’t going to repeat the mistake that he had made in Metro.
Luke watched in silence as Reid left, “Fuck,” he thought he had been so close to pulling Reid in and kissing him.
“What is wrong with me, I just broke up with Noah, I don’t need any complications with Dr. Reid Oliver,” he thought shaking his head.
This day kept getting worse, Reid was pissed coming out of Al’s after Bob Hughes told him of all the things they would have to put off for the neuro-wing. They didn’t have enough money and now Reid would need to find more and he knew just who would have some.
“Hey, watch it Dr. Oliver,” Jessy said as he came out of the bookstore.
“Oh, sorry Mr. Duncan, closing shop already?” Reid apologized and then asked.
“I hear you decided to stay in this crazy town,” Jessy replied seeing the bruise on Reid’s face.
“It has a few attractions,” Reid flirted with Jessy.
Jessy blushed and answered Reid’s first question, “I usually close the shop at six and stick around but Ken and I are having a dinner party,” he explained and then added,” What happened to you, you look like you’ve been in a brawl.”
Reid didn’t respond to the question but asked instead,” Who’s Ken?”
“Oh, Ken’s my partner, sorry I hope I wasn’t giving you mixed signals the other day,” Jessy smiled and then added, “Why don’t you come over tonight and hang out with us, there’s going to be lots of good food.”
“Food, I’m incapable of passing-up good food,” Reid replied with a smile in return, surprising himself.
Mr. No SmallTalk and I’m an island was going to a dinner party, but he knew Luke had been invited and might be there, so maybe he could start lobbying for some funding.
