Busy and productive week at work. Our new employee started Monday. She seems to be picking up things quickly, which is very nice. Her first week was a little more eventful than anyone expected, as she had a death in the family and had to miss a day and a half out of it. She was so worried about us being upset about that, but it's like "WTF, you lost a close family member! Take your time, we got your back." Seriously, I can't imagine anyone being dickish about it, but it says something that she felt her last department would have been. Oy. One of the reasons I'm glad I work for the division that I do.
Saw Pacific Rim this week with friends.
I enjoyed it quite a bit, I thought it was definitely better than the other summer blockbusters from a writing standpoint, but I didn't seem to fall in love with it the way everyone else did. Guess it's not quite my kind of nerdishness, maybe? When I was a kid, I liked the Godzilla and Mothra movies; not sure what happened since then. After all, I loved the first Jurassic Park movie. I will say, though, that I absolutely loved Idris Elba and his character, Stacker Pentecost. His relationship with Mako was so wonderful to see. So. Much. Respect. Which is why I say this was so well-written. A fully developed female character that isn't played just for the male gaze and is written as a full partner for a joint endeavor with the male protagonist. Guillermo del Toro can write all the movies.
And Idris Elba's voice. He could read the phone book and I'd get off on it. Him and Benedict Cumberbatch. UNF.
Got a lot done around the condo this weekend. Thought I'd try to get it moderately clean before Nancy came back from California, only to find out last night that she's been delayed another week. This time because her carry-on bag got stolen, along with all her medications. So, she had to file a report and replace the meds. Now she's coming home next Sunday. Still, I cleaned the kitchen and vacuumed upstairs and down, started clearing off the dining table. Nothing that I wouldn't really do normally, but have been slacking on more often than not lately. I really need to get back into doing something every weekend instead of letting things slide for 3-4 weeks and then feeling overwhelmed with having to clean all the things.
And just for my own sake, so I can look back and congratulate myself for my productivity this weekend:
• Took out 3 bags of trash
• Cleaned both litterboxes and replaced litter completely
• Did one load of dishes
• Vacuumed upstairs and down
• Cleaned kitchen completely
• Did grocery shopping for the week (picked up fresh black figs to put under the broiler with goat cheese and prosciutto, yum)
• Wrote 350 words on new 00Q fic for Kat (600 words total so far)
• Started clearing off dining table
That means I need to get my full-size laptop back up and running, because that's where Outlook lives and I use it to remind me to do my chores. I've been putting that off by being too lazy to back it up. I'd like to get that done this week, so I can take it in and get it fixed. Nancy and I can easily share the netbook, but it's nice to have the two so Nancy can take the smaller one into her bedroom in the evening to play solitaire and stuff.
