Art for a better cause

So, I'm teaching a small series of art classes next month for adults with significant mental deficiencies. Actually, they're a hoot to work with. Right now, I'm up to my elbows in prepping a bunch of small dried gourds. We're going to make birdhouses out of them. But before we get that far, I have to get the gourds ready to paint.

Amazing how many seeds those little things hold. And the primer paint fumes? yeah, it's still too winter outside to open windows. Today is going to be interesting.

Also, we will be making "fairie gardens", and the last two days, we will be making springtime mobiles. It's a great way to use up some of my wire hanger collection. :D

It's great fun to work with them, because there's a no-holds-barred sense of fun with art. There are no rules, and the enthusiasm is infectious and invigorating. The only downside, is that any art project I come up with cannot be too difficult, or take too long to work on. I have about an hour of attention span before even the highest functioning person there loses interest.

So, I have to work hard, to keep them interested, but not too taxed, and make it a fun and creative project that shows off their talents in a positive light.

Simple, yet an incredibly huge project.

And I'm really excited about it. :)
