One of the "have-tos" that I have to get done before I get to play with my dining room (or anything else) - and actually my next project, come hell or high water - is to build a pot rack in the kitchen to solve the following problems:
- a crowded pantry
- an exposed trash can that Daisy keeps pulling things out of
- wasted space between the fridge and the pantry that could be used for storage
Storage is a precious commodity for anyone. My kitchen is pretty damned big, and I have a LOT of cabinets - but I also have a bad back, which means that there are things (pots and pans being a major one) that I have to keep within easy reach. I can't bend over to get a frying pan from a lower cabinet when my back is acting up. So my lower cabinets are used for stuff I hardly ever use, and my pots and pans are crammed into an already over-stuffed pantry.
Enter the toilet shelf pot rack:
The "before" picture in the top left corner shows how it is now - big ol' space between the fridge and the pantry that could be used - and will be, once I get this shelfy thing built. Pots and pans and lunchboxes on the top shelves (I drew two, but there'll probably be three), and a trash can with a lid underneath.
Other have-tos in the picture? The kitchen sink. I have one of those nifty white fiberglass ones that are all shiny and pretty and white...six years ago. Today, not so much. It's chipped and scratched and stained and pitted - and it's been repaired twice already. I HATE my sink. These things were rabidly popular when my house was built, and the only option I had on it was white or beige - I wanted stainless steel, and I still do. I also want a shallower sink. This one is nearly 10" deep!! "Luxury?" No: back pain! It's ridiculous to have to bend over that far to wash the dishes! I guess they were designed with the idea that someone would be using the dishwasher for that.
Which is something else on the list. I don't use my dishwasher. I never have. And I don't want it. I'm about five minutes away from hauling the thing out, selling it on craigslist, and using that space for storage. I'd like to build a wine rack in its place for Boyfriend's mead (he brews), but I may just get rid of the damned thing and throw a curtain over the hole for the time being. At least then I could put the dog food under there or something, whatever.
Then there's the light fixture...both of them, actually. There's a pendant lamp over the sink that I'm okay with, although I really wish it was a big metal Moroccan-style lantern. :)
The central fixture is the issue, though. It doesn't work. It's blown through a set and a half of tubes in six months, which means one or both of the ballasts are hosed. I haven't gotten up there to check them yet - I suppose I should get that done this weekend. I was waiting until I figured out whether I'd rather fix it or just replace the whole fixture, since I don't like the way it looks; but a new fixture, even on the cheap, will be a hundred bucks or more, and a new ballast is ten. Question answered, at least for the time being. Right now, having a well-lit space in which to paint some artwork for Springfest supersedes the idea of boycotting electrical repair because I don't like the way the light looks (which is kind of dumb and childish if you put it that way).
Anyway. I love drawing these little pictures. :)
