So, the Oscar nominees were announced today. WALL-E got a bunch of nominations, all of them fairly pointless except for Best Original Screenplay and Best Animated Film. That last one is only semi-pointless. Dark Knight also mostly got pointless nominations, except for the Heath Ledger thing, which everybody knew was going to happen. I'm surprised it didn't get nominated for Best Film. I didn't honestly like it very much, but it's the most Oscar-baitish comic book film I've ever seen. I really wish WALL-E had gotten Best Film, but I guess that was always a long shot. It's just . . . it's an amazing, beautiful, well-done film that deserves more worthy competition, at the very least. I've heard Bolt is good and Kung-fu Panda is . . . not as terrible as it sounds, but they don't strike me as being worthy of sharing a category with WALL-E.
What do you guys think about the Best Animated Feature category? I like that it gives animated films a chance to win Oscars when they normally probably would not(Spirited Away, especially,) but I don't like that its being there seems to block animated films from being nominated for more serious awards. I know, there's no rule that says they can't be, but the category was essentially created in response to the makers of Chicken Run trying to get it a Best Film nomination. I mean, it judges films based on their medium, not their quality, and it's pretty obvious every year who's going to win, with the exceptions of Spirited Away and Happy Feet. I mean, you throw a movie like Ratatouille in with a movie like Surf's Up, and what do you think is going to happen? Or even when Cars and Happy Feet gave one another genuine competition, remember what the other movie was? Monster House. I'm pretty sure that movie is actually rather obscure now.
In general, I think this is the first year where I'm only rooting for one film. There wasn't even a quirky dark horse comedy this year, like Little Miss Sunshine or Juno. I do plan to see Frost/Nixon, Doubt, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at some point. Of course, last year I said that about Michael Clayton. Which I still intend to see . . . at some point.
In other news, due to some weird fluke of Hulu, I saw tonight's episode of Bones on Tuesday. The circus one, anyway. It was . . . weird. I mean, really, really weird. Of course, you really can say that about this entire season. I wish they'd stop coming up with weird gimmicky bodies, though I guess this was better than some of the others. Also, Lost returned. I haven't seen all of the season five premiere yet, and I'm pretty sure nobody here watches Lost, so all I'll say is, "Um . . ." This show has not lost it's "What?" factor. Not by a long shot.
Also, season two of Ouran is out and Netflix does not have it. Ah, well. Maybe I'll just buy it.
