Another ho-hum week has come and gone, and another is shaping up. Last week featured lots of stuff that did not work for whatever reason, and it is frustrating me to no end. I feel like I've done a lot and yet nothing at the same time. How does that work? The 'office gossip' is that three techs are being fired soon- one for incompetence (but lots of effort, I think), one because the PI's postdoc wife needs a job (so unethical, I can't believe that's allowed), and one because the PI just doesn't like her (as JP put it, 'if I don't like you, I can fire you at any time') and some incompetence as well. Craziness. I swear if I were a tech, I would've been fired by now too. So when Stacey told Gyunjee and I that she had to tell us something, I was like oh great, she's quitting too. But she's pregnant!! It's so exciting! They've been trying for over 5 years to have a baby, and after lots of doctor's appointments and surgeries, they were finally told that in vitro was the only way it would happen. J/K! She immediately started crying after she told us... it was probably the highlight of my lab week (not the crying, the good news :P ).
Saturday I got a free lunch at Panera (woohoo, potato soup day!!) because I got 'selected' (i.e. no one else wanted to do it) to be on the Comps info panel for the BGSA and we had to discuss what we were going to talk about and how we should organize it. After listening to their stories, I can't believe how relatively easy I had it. I didn't have the level of grilling that most of them seem to have, I didn't leave in tears, I didn't take time off lab to work on comps (it seems like everyone did this... I wish I had in hindsight, but I felt too guilty about it, even though Sandro said I could slow down lab work if I had to), etc... it was interesting to hear the different experiences. However, that's exactly why you don't listen to everyone else's horror stories before you take yours... everyone's experience is so different. It was nice to see some people at the lunch that I rarely get to see though (including Michelle, Adrianna, and even Arvind, who I haven't seen in ages). One funny moment included us talking about how we pitch an idea to our PI, and they say 'no, not now' or 'no, that's no a good idea', and then X amount of time later they approach you and say 'I have this awesome idea!'... no kidding. I told you that! We've decided this is the PhD's student's version of Inception... Adriana says she's going to email Jorge Cham of PhD comics about this idea. I think it's a good one, I hope he uses it! Haha.
I think I'm coming down with a cold (first sickness in almost a year!), so today I plan on doing nothing but being a blob on the couch. And playing my trumpet, because I CAN now! I love getting my chops back. :)
