It was strange, how death could change her. She'd known from childhood that it surrounded her, that people and Rocs and everyone died, eventually. She'd known that people all around her were dying, dying, slowly, every day, everyone was going to be dead someday or perhaps tomorrow -

It was so strange, how the death of humans could change her so perfectly.

Haytham didn't look at her any more, and it wasn't until she looked around for him, in the first time in days, that she realized - he wasn't there. Janan stayed by her side, loyal and loving and trying to protect her from her own demons, as she always had. Janan filled the hole that -

And him - his name was unimportant, and she had wiped it from her memories. Every bit of him stayed locked inside the box she had put it in; folded neatly, gathering dust in some corner of her mind.

The queen was no longer her mother, simply the Rocmother. Asma sat at her side, listening to her voice - no, no, no, over and over again, and watching the way the petitioners' eyes went flat with despair. And Asma always wanted to tell them, ha, you have no idea.

The green stone sat on her windowsill still. The orb of blue glass sat besides it, and they seemed to go so well together that Asma always found herself thinking if only it worked that way in real life.

It was strange, how this shallow wound could break open her heart.
