Princess & the Frog, Online Personas

Wow, so Disney has finally dusted off their pencils, stepped away from Maya or whatever 3D programs they've been dealing with beside Pixar and are going old school and just the way most of us like it with a 2D movie The Princess and the Frog.

As if we shouldn't be jumping for joy at the fact that Disney hasn't released anything drawn and pretty to look at in a long while and voila- the Princess is not Caucasian, of course, people are never satisfied...

Okay, let me just make one thing clear. I am also a minority. I am Hispanic and I grew up in Brooklyn where most women my race have five kids, a father who's done prison time and that's if he's even around to be a father, and they raise their families on welfare. Half the Hispanics in my neighborhood are illegal immigrants. The biggest concern of women my way are how much they can get a name brand purse and pair of sneakers for a cheap price bc let's face it - lower/middle class or not, there's this odd urge to "look" like we have money by putting big earrings and fake nails.

But I do have to say- wtf are ppl complaining about? I hear Disney had to change the name of the movie from "The Frog Princess" to the title it is now bc ppl were taking it as, "black women are not attractive." Her name was Maddy and she was a maid for a white family- also changed bc of her name sounding close to a racial slur and bc of the whole hierarchy thing. So Disney made her a chef and changed her name to Tiana. NOW ppl are angry bc the prince is Indian or some sort of Eastern race- not black.

*sigh* Really? Are you being serious? And they're angry at the voodoo guy and some other things in there. My bf has a friend who lives in New Orleans and guess what there is over there... Umm... Voodoo! And let's face it, Disney has been a bit controversial before and if we really want to take it back, we can even call Disney sexist- 16 year old princess' who were usually singing damsels in distress needing to be loved by a man etc. Whatever. But we watch the crap. There's been plenty of times that ppl could go into Disney Classics and find something that might have been stereotypical. But you have to give Disney a little bit of props here. The princess isn't blond, the prince isn't a a dude with a cape/sword/insert typical RPG medieval stereotype here, and it's not love at first sight. So the prince might be Indian or whatever- interracial relationships are cool too, aren't they? And there's no castle or fictional sparkly backdrops, it's more urban and closer to home.

Honestly, I don't get it. I'm not sure if some ppl are never satisfied or some ppl will point at anything they can in the name of their fight for justice bc of "racism." When Resident Evil 4 came out, a bunch of Spaniards/Ricans/insert other Hispanic race, did not threaten to rip Capcom's head off bc a "white guy" was shooting the Hispanic zombies... RE5 comes out however, and the white guy shoots black zombies- all hell breaks loose. And if anyone knows their history- Japan was in isolation for about a good century while Europeans were spreading imperialism and slavery so Japanese ppl don't really fall into the "we're racist against black ppl" category bc "black ppl" were never in the picture to begin with. And if anything, Japan just stereotypes anyone that isn't Japanese. After all, apparently all Americans are blond, and have simple names like Chris and John. I know bc I watch a lot of anime and that's how Americans are portrayed haha.

Please. Stop. Whining. *shrugs* Just be happy that Disney is drawing and they're stepping out of their usual traditions.

Okay, new topic, I found this really cool project titled, "Personas" and it's basically a Processing project built to "categorize one's online identity" just based on your name. It's really odd. It literally breaks down how much you travel, how "famous" you are, how much education you have etc. I guess the point is to de-humanize your name bc once it's on the web- the internet comes with it's own set of opinions which are often wrong bc the computer is a machine. The point is to show "how the internet sees you."

Personas @ MIT

I knew my online results were wrong bc it said I traveled a lot. Hah. Not even close...
