[magi] Adventures in asexuality

Sep 14, 2007 08:33

In case anyone in the world didn't know, I'm asexual. This means that I don't experience sexual attraction, and I'm largely confused by the weight and significance placed on it by those who do. This also means that I'm kinda borked when trying to write someone for whom sex is a major part of how they interact with the world. (I'm lookin' at you here, Harkness.)

This also also means that I may be the only person around who, when wondering whether to write a sex scene, thinks something like "Hm. It might be an interesting place to take those two characters. I had better do some research on the physiological effects of orgasm," and then goes to read the Wikipedia article.*

*In theory, the way to see what works in a fictional style is to go read well-written stuff. I have the problem that even well-written stuff like what synecdochic writes turns me to a special level of off.

I have to admit, a fair portion of why I'm even trying is to go "Nyah!" at x_los, who did not believe I was capable of writing a sex scene. I like to think I can write anything. Possibly because I am too susceptible to pissing contests for my own good.

Did I ever tell you about the time I was researching sex, followed two or three links on Wikipedia, and found myself reading about an ancient Indian grammarian with no referenced connection to sex at all? Yes; this is about the way things go.

(On another note, I/we've been sporadically AFK for the last bit; various posts and responses are coming. Hopefully over the weekend.)

musing, [magi]
