Sora / Kingdom Hearts anonymous March 8 2009, 17:29:04 UTC
Re: Sora / Kingdom Hearts anonymous March 8 2009, 17:58:38 UTC
Sora is a hero -- don't ever forget that. He has a big heart, is always ready to help anyone in need regardless of whether he knows them or not, never gives up and is very devoted to his friends. Sora sees the good in pretty much everyone, and he is also a little naive because of that.

However this is not to say that he's going to just forgive the bad guys for doing something bad -- he's gonna put them in their place first. Like I said, he's the hero, and he has a very strong "I'm the good guy so I have to beat up the bad guys!" sort of attitude. He might be friendly and nice, but he will stand up for what he thinks is right no matter what. Sora can and will fight to protect.

Sora isn't just a whiny little kid. He's actually not a whiny kid at all. He's always got a smile to offer, but he does have a kind of attitude problem if he's pushed or messed with.

Sora can definitely stand up for himself, smiles or otherwise. Don't forget that.

It partially depends on what time line you're taking him from. Because while his characterization doesn't change as much (as oh, say, Riku's) between the three games, there are certain nuances you have to take into consideration.

I've heard some people call his characterization 'shallow' because he doesn't seem to grow or evolve as much as some of the other KH peeps do, but that's just not true. Sure he doesn't have tons of inner, personal struggle or conflict that tends to make RP communities salivate and pee their pants over. But he's not all fluff, either.

So yeah, I'd really need to know if we're talking about KH1/CoM Sora or KHII Sora before I start tl;dr-ing unnecessarily.

What kind of things to look at closely? When does "a good chunk of writing" become tl;dr? Just anything in general you can think of.

As someone who reviews apps, I am usually looking for about three things

• Spelling/grammar
• Characterization
• Detail in personality as opposed to background

For background it's good to hit the points in canon that pertain to your character only, if possible(especially for minor characters). For a major character brief mentions with expansions on really important plot is the way to go. Backgrounds(even for major characters) shouldn't really be more than a page or so, imo. Anything a little over that is fine but I believe that a background should serve as a concise summary, that's all. Every little detail isn't needed, and I'm usually not looking for every major detail.

Personality and samples should be the strongest sections. idk if other mods feel the same way, but personality and samples are what I enjoy reading so I don't mind a bunch of writing there, especially personality. Some games like you to stay within their word limits for samples though ( ... )

I review apps as well, and I like to see the personality come out in everything. It's why our RP doesn't require a personality section on the application - we'd rather you show us your character's personality than tell us. I would rather read a long history that reveals a lot about the character. What I don't want is a total canon review though, just what pertains to your character.

This is just me though, and I know some mods in other places disagree. :3

Another just me thing, but I really like apps that make me genuinely interested in trying a series for myself.

Cloud Strife - FFVII/Crisis Core/Kingdom Hearts anonymous March 8 2009, 17:35:19 UTC
Original FFVII, Crisis Core or Kingdom Hearts. In fact I'd actually like KH!Cloud, he seems like a cool cat too. (But fuck Advent Children, he's too emo for me there.)

Oh and um, I already know not to make him emo and/or super!uke all the time. I'm looking for a more in depth sort of thing, as I like to think I already have a basic grasp on his character.

Kingdom Hearts
Cloud in Kingdom Hearts is probably a lot more quiet than his original versions. He doesn't launch into a ramble (half the time he answers with fragments or short responses) and he's very deliberate with his words. He doesn't beat around the bush and says what he finds necessary. For instance, when he refused Sora's invitation in Chain of Memories, even though it was a mere memory, he says "not interested" and brushes them off. He means it in a completely neutral way.

More importantly, in addition to not being talkative, Cloud is very secretive. He hardly ever shares anything remotely personal with anybody. In Kingdom Hearts I all we hear is that he's "looking for someone" and he leaves it at that. He never elaborates on who exactly it is he's searching for (or any other information for that matter), and we only find out -- even then mostly from assumptions -- when he clashes with Sephiroth. Keep his responses concise and short, and refrain from giving out too much when asked questions. Unless it's something that ( ... )

Oh god, thank you so much for responding, especially with advice on KH Cloud! No one ever seems to give advice about KH Cloud (probably because he's not around as much as other Clouds in roleplay) and it kind of frustrates me sometimes. And another thing is that I know that KH Cloud is a different version, but I still tend to draw from his original FFVII self. Honestly, I don't think that's a bad thing -- it's just that I don't want him to be completely FFVII, if that makes any sense.

I've been working at KH Cloud for quite some time now. I started off weak, built him up stronger, but now I feel like I'm fizzing out. I don't think I've gone horribly OOC or anything, but looking at your advice, I know that you're right and thus I've realized that I have definitely strayed from KH Cloud's characterization. He's not like, some weepy uke who tells everyone everything, but still. I've been worrying that I've made him too open lately.

However... he has been in this place for a while. He's made friends and has gotten close to people. He's ( ... )
