Cloud Strife - Crisis Core/Kingdom Hearts erinilliana March 8 2009, 19:12:50 UTC
Kingdom Hearts
Cloud in Kingdom Hearts is probably a lot more quiet than his original versions. He doesn't launch into a ramble (half the time he answers with fragments or short responses) and he's very deliberate with his words. He doesn't beat around the bush and says what he finds necessary. For instance, when he refused Sora's invitation in Chain of Memories, even though it was a mere memory, he says "not interested" and brushes them off. He means it in a completely neutral way.

More importantly, in addition to not being talkative, Cloud is very secretive. He hardly ever shares anything remotely personal with anybody. In Kingdom Hearts I all we hear is that he's "looking for someone" and he leaves it at that. He never elaborates on who exactly it is he's searching for (or any other information for that matter), and we only find out -- even then mostly from assumptions -- when he clashes with Sephiroth. Keep his responses concise and short, and refrain from giving out too much when asked questions. Unless it's something that wouldn't involve him much, such as describing the Heartless and all that good stuff that isn't considered private.

Being quiet wouldn't make Cloud socially inept. He's just reserved. He shouldn't have any difficulty conversing with people, only that they might find it frustrating that he's not a talker. Or maybe they'd like the silence for a change. However, his withdrawn nature is sort of pushed aside when he's confronting Sephiroth, since he's a bit more boisterous there. Not too much though, so don't overdo that if a Sephiroth is in the community. He's a wee bit more fired up is all.

Cloud is. . . considerably arrogant. Not outright pompous or "I'm better than you," but he's fully confident in his abilities. He thought he could defeat Hercules without a problem, a highly revered combatant. And, well, he ended up losing. This doesn't put him down any. Cloud isn't a sore loser; he'll accept defeat unless victory means something very important to him (remember the deal he made with Hades and how desperate he was to take down Hercules until the arrangement was made invalid).

In super condensed form, he's a quiet tough guy.

And remember that this is a different version of Cloud. That means who he should know from Final Fantasy VII doesn't necessarily apply to here. Red XIII never made a cameo appearance, for one, neither did Barret and a few others, so that should leave them out. And unless he spent his childhood with Leon and the others, Yuffie, Aerith and Cid would be newer acquaintances in comparison to someone like Tifa.

Crisis Core
He's very much a silly man here compared to seven years or so later. At this time and point Cloud is a young teenager -- roughly fifteen, give or take, I don't really remember. He's far more spirited in contrast to his self in the original game. This is before he's more or less traumatized by the events with Zack, so he should be livelier. He's not too bubbly, but he shouldn't be, as you've stated, all emotional. He's actually a pretty fun guy once people get to know him, such as how Zack managed to socialize with him. They're both hillbillies.

This Cloud here lacks a good amount of self-esteem. He's not at all confident in what he can do, what with being a mere grunt/foot soldier. He's soft spoken and terribly modest -- unsure of his own potential. He figures it won't hurt to try, but he doesn't expect much out of it. That's the way he is. And he's certainly not charismatic and ends up being the quiet one that keeps to himself. He'll slowly open up if someone approaches him and actually genuinely wants to get along. This doesn't apply to everyone, however (for examples, let's look at Zack).

Also? He's got that terrible motion sickness whenever he flies. He'll be leaning on something trying to breathe should he ever get around to doing that for a while.

t-tldr; oops Just some aspects of his characters to keep in mind. Unfortunately I've never gone beyond the first few hours of Final Fantasy VII, so I can't comment on that.

Oh god, thank you so much for responding, especially with advice on KH Cloud! No one ever seems to give advice about KH Cloud (probably because he's not around as much as other Clouds in roleplay) and it kind of frustrates me sometimes. And another thing is that I know that KH Cloud is a different version, but I still tend to draw from his original FFVII self. Honestly, I don't think that's a bad thing -- it's just that I don't want him to be completely FFVII, if that makes any sense.

I've been working at KH Cloud for quite some time now. I started off weak, built him up stronger, but now I feel like I'm fizzing out. I don't think I've gone horribly OOC or anything, but looking at your advice, I know that you're right and thus I've realized that I have definitely strayed from KH Cloud's characterization. He's not like, some weepy uke who tells everyone everything, but still. I've been worrying that I've made him too open lately.

However... he has been in this place for a while. He's made friends and has gotten close to people. He's developed -- I'm just afraid that his development has maybe started to actually toe at the line of OOC. Cloud's definitely not going around spilling out his heart to everyone or anything, but still. What do you think about that, though? I mean, I know it's okay for a character to develop and all that and I firmly believe that Cloud has the capability of like, making friends and being able to make strong connections with people... but I don't want people to just see it as like, me the mun pushing him into things for the lulz or anything. I wouldn't do a friendship or whatever that I didn't honestly think would work. I'm just a little concerned that the fact he is now backed by some shakey characterization, it looks bad.

That's true. I've only seen about two Kingdom Hearts-verse Clouds, and yours would be the third if you're not one of them. And oh, yes, seeing as how this Cloud is basically a different version of the original one, it's reasonable to draw some key character points from him. It makes sense, since it's him and yet not him at the same time, so I see what you mean.

Haha, I think that's perfectly fine. Character development is a crucial step in role playing, especially for the more anti-social characters. Judging from what you've said, I'd say it should be okay for him to be opening up more if he's been there for long and got to know some people better. It's not like everyone will be strangers forever, right? After all, there are characters that undergo little changes the longer they stay, if only due to the influences of the people around them, as well as the environment. It might look out of character, but sometimes time and experience can change the smallest things which contribute to the bigger traits.

Fff, that's all right~

Yeah, he's been there since about... October? To be technical I've had him in that game for over a year now, but he actually died in-game at one point lmao, so.

But yeah, I get that. I know character development is important, I think I'm just being way too paranoid lately and hoping no one is taking it the wrong way or something. Still though, I'll try to fix him up a little, since I still think he's getting a little bit off. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out! Lol not many people seem to be giving advice this time around just yet. But yes, I always appreciate a second opinion on things because it definitely helps point out things I may not have noticed or had simply forgotten about over time.

I'll also be taking the advice on CC Cloud to heart too, as I think I'm gonna try hunting down somewhere nice to place him soon.

The way he acts around Leon and Aerith suggests they're far more than just "newer acquaintances" I'm not gonna really get into his and Leon's banter in KH2, but... c'mon, who acts like that around someone they barely know?

As for Aerith? She's cheering for him, and no matter where he goes, she's waiting for him! He's a dear friend to her, not a minor acquaintace.
