I know I know I'm terrible go watch TOS (I've seen every ep but it's been years and shiney movie is shiney!)

Okay. Movie!Chekov does NOT have much backstory. As in almost none. Help. Much help.

Also, what's that russian phrase he says a few times? What does it mean? And moar helpful russian would be good? How to make the funitek aksent non annoying since it's pretty damn integral to him?

As I said it's been too long. I did find a trek wiki however that had an episode list, and apparently the crazy one with the hippies has a lot of Chekov backstory. Namely his ex girlfriend. XD

I haven't seen the Star Trek movie, so I can't comment on that, but about Russian-- well, obviously don't type out the accent if it's a text post. But the way Russian works, there are a lot of words made by combining other words together. Plus, Russian grammar works on the case system-- basically, nouns are conjugated (the word is declined, if you've taken Latin??) uh, which means that it is less about word order than English is, and you determine what verb goes with what pronoun by the endings. Russian also (I think) lends itself to run-on sentences?? So thinking about these things will possibly help in understanding how a Russian speaker will screw up their English.

I don't actually know much Russian at all, so if anyone wants to correct me please do.

Chekov actually has his own unique Not-Actually-Russian accent; the actor from the film even says in an interview (if I recall) that Chekov's accent is nothing like a real Russian accent, but it's so iconic to the show that they had to include it. Thaaaaaaat said this is still super helpful becuase I'd like to know what real russian accents are like before I go butchering it Trek style.

Let's see, Chekov...

Yes, I think it's good to know how the real thing works even if the canon is totally wonky.

bit tl;dr

With my semester over I'm really out of practice with my Russian-influences XD; What you say is right - the order or words don't matter, just as long as you get the conjugations right (and even then folk can mostly understand non-native speakers, but... that's kind of a moot point with Chekov anyway). There's several cases and I sucked at them so can't help much with that -.-;

I can't remember much about run-on sentences.

And... canon-wise I don't know about Chekov's speaking mannerisms, I've been watching TOS for the first time since I was a kid and haven't gotten to him yet. But I do have two Russian profs on my campus and both of them do not use articles (a, the) in their English sentences, since the Russian language has no need for them. One of the two says he doesn't understand the point of having them XD; ...the funny thing is I never actually noticed until he brought it up one day, so I guess maybe they aren't really needed, eh? But yeah, whether or not Chekov is like that, I have no idea~

I believe the only Russian word Chekov speaks is "yomayo." (I thought he said another one when receiving orders from Pike, but it was actually just "Happy to.")

Also, I'd say the most integral parts of Chekov's accent is turning V's into W's, and pronouncing Captain as "Keptin."
