Stop me!

Jan 10, 2006 10:11

I'm starting to scare myself. As my required textbooks for cataloging haven't shown up yet, I've been occupying my time this morning by reading Understanding MARC Bibliographic: Machine-Readable Cataloging. Halfway through the first section, there have been numerous times when I've thought, "Nifty!" or "How elegant!" ... and I even said, "Wow! Cool!" out loud once, in reference to the ability to use the second indicator value of MARC records to give the number of nonfiling characters. The example given was The Emperor's New Clothes. Ordinarily, the computer would file it under "T" but when you use a second indicator value of 4, it disregards the first 4 characters and files it under "E." How cool is that?!?!?

Umm... please stop me. The fact that I'm loving this cataloging stuff is starting to scare me a bit. Of course, I already knew I was into various standards for organizing digitized archives and digital libraries... but.. Crap. I'm going to be one of those people that sit in a basement and catalog, aren't I?
