R.I.P to our friendly, neighbourhood butcher

Dec 06, 2009 00:56

I buy most of my meat from Hugo's, which is a butcher shop pretty close to where we live. Hugo's bacon was voted "Best in the city," much of his meat is from mennonites and his son is the vet on the farm many of his animals come from. It is all organic, though the does not advertise it as such. He also has amazing hot dogs, which he preserves with salt (no nitrates, no chemicals). Everything that is preserved is preserved with salt.

Hugo always smiled when he saw me, since I was a fairly regular customer. When we came back from living in New York for 2 months, he asked where I had been (we left for NYC on very short notice).

The last time I went to Hugo's was November 14 (I guess we've been going out a lot lately). I picked up some black forest ham, for the first time ever (great for making ham and cheese sandwiches), some bacon, probably some chicken, likely some eggs and possibly ground beef. He asked where Julia was and I said, "home with daddy" (it was a Saturday). As usual, I either said "Tschuss," or "bis spaeter" ('goodbye' or 'see you later' in German). He was German and I liked to get a little bit in when I went. We usually had a little chat about something-his hunting trip, eating honey for good health, how most of his babies were preemies because his wife was Rh- and he was not but all turned out well in the end, etc. etc.

Today, I went to Hugo's to buy more meat. The store was wrapped up in paper and in big letters it said, "Closed for renovations," then I saw, "Closed to a death in the family," then on the left hand side, I saw this notice:

WEIDELICH, Hugo - Suddenly on Sunday, November 15th, 2009. Predeceased by his wife Alida (1999). Beloved father of Peter (Gisela), Siegfried (Tina), Rolf (Jacalyn), Martin and Heidi. Proud Opa of David, Lindsey, Daniel, Michael, Juliana, Jacob, Micah and Alida. Resting at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Ave., Markham (4 lights north of Hwy. 7), 905-305-8508. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 23rd from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, at the German Church of God. Interment to follow at Glendale Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to World Vision Canada.

He was 75-that was written on a piece of paper below the obit.

They should also add "Much loved neighbourhood butcher." I noticed most-possibly ALL the people who commented on the Toronto Star online obituary were clients...and there were 10 comments, which is quite a few since it probably takes 10 people looking to leave one. I plan on doing it, but haven't yet.
