Superman Returns's Failings? Again?!

► Few minor thoughts and things tonight:► Yesterday I mentioned I had numbness and an "alien" sensation in my left thumb and index finger. It's lingering today. As I said before, this is nothing new as I've always had bouts of both since the paralysis in 1990. But after a year or more of normality in my left hand and arm, it's going to take a bit to get used to having the numb-y aches and weakness again.

► Shopping was a bit of a disappointment yesterday. Dad and I went to Walmart specifically to see if they had restocked the 11" x 17" poster "snap" frames. They did not. There was a moment or two of awkwardness as I stood in the aisle just a couple of feet from a worker checking the shelves of frames (I think that's what she was doing) while I tried to figure out what to do next. Ended up just picking up some hand soap and popcorn and then Dad and I went to visit my grandmother.

It's not exactly a major event or hardship. The point is more that it's easy to get derailed when you go somewhere for a specific thing and it's not there.

► Dad was suggesting I go out with him again on Friday, but my nerves have been a bit spotty and I'm not sure if I want to go out again this week. Feel like playing hermit for the rest of the month (which is admittedly only 6 days).
(Canada Post) Mail delivery may stop Monday - I'm getting fairly antsy over this, the reason being that I have a couple of parcels coming from the US through regular mail, and this might delay them for several weeks (depending on how long the strike is). Now I don't mean for that to sound self centered or selfish. It's just that with my chronic worrying and obsessive compulsive disorder, I'll be obsessively worried about the packages the entire time and fretting.

Especially with regards to the Black Canary drawing I won off of Ebay on Monday. I don't expect that to actually ship until next week.

Disney's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Hits $400 Million Worldwide in Less Than a Week - Does this mean they'll stop bitching about the movie "under-performing" for it's North American opening weekend gross of "only" $90 million?

Bryan Singer On Why Superman Returns Didn't Work - From the article:“I think that ‘Superman Returns’ was a bit nostalgic and romantic, and I don’t think that was what people were expecting, especially in the summer,”
I enjoyed the movie, but I'm not sure how romantic it actually was. If anything it seemed remote and distant. I think Singer misjudged (and continues to misjudge) the characters and the movie, as he saddled the movie with a too adult and complicated character plot. Clark as a character was diminished to a background role, while the invented character of Lois' fiance took his place. Superman having an illegitimate child that Lois may or may not remember him fathering cast him in the unfortunate role of deadbeat father, and seemed to imply that Superman actually wasn't that important anyway by actually recounting the speech his own father said to him the moment before he died ("The son becomes the father, the father becomes the son"). Most superhero movies involve the character confronting his or her own mortality and overcoming obstacles, Returns oddly has a seemingly immortal character acknowledging his eventual death and replacement. Pair all of that with Lois perpetually scowling about Superman being gone, and misusing Superman as a potential home wrecker and giving us uncomfortable scenes of him spying on them and breaking into their house at night and you have a shockingly creepy Superman movie.

All that creepiness, and the exact same plot from Superman the Movie, including reused dialog. Superman Returns is a movie I enjoy as a whole while disliking a lot of the parts. Not unlike Richard Lester's gimicky and a bit too irreverent Superman II. Which, itself, came so frustratingly close to working but was weighed down in brazen and bizarrely obnoxious bellhops, Clark diving into a fireplace, cellophane chest symbol snares, flamboyant disco rollerskaters, flying toupee and ice cream gags, memory-erasing super kisses, and a small town American boy cast out of Oliver Twist.

I should go rewatch Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut and chill.

Star Wars in 3 minutes...with action-figures! - They really made figures of everyone in the Star Wars universe, didn't they?
