Lyssie gave me the prompt of Something de-aged a group of people from being in their 80s to 20s and 30s.
I call it 1st Time, 2nd Time...
1st Time, 2nd Time
It has only happened to a few dozen people worldwide (that we know about), but the change was so noticable, so prominent that nobody can ignore it.
The First Time is the life once lived, their lives up until the event, all the way until, when they were old and grey, the Second Time restored them to their youth. All so affected have retained their memories from before they became young once more.
While most of those affected are reeling from the degentrification, a few seize the initiative of what has happened - an action that puts them at loggerheads with their fellow affecteds.

The Unaffected
Jane Tanaka
Granddaughter of prominent Japanese businesswoman Mrs. Tanaka (Naoko Mori), this Japanese-American was running the investigation into what caused the Second Time (or "Dechron" as some call it - from de-chrono or un-time)...or she was, until Congress cut funding in favor of something that a) might be figured out, and b) might be useful - Jane's philisophical about it, saying "we might finally get a cure for cancer." Besides, her team was brought under the United Nations umbrella.
For Jane, the downside is that much of the funding is being provided by her grandmother. While her grandmother was resigned to Jane's marriage to a Chinese-American (Matt, played by John Cho), that was before the Second Time; Jane has no idea if that feeling has changed, and grows more and more worried that it has, the more she sees how a number of Second Timers are doing things they couldn't or wouldn't have done the First Time.
While she’s heard a rumor that her old friend Talia (Rekha Sharma) is doing covert stuff in her retirement, Jane doesn’t want to push the issue when she talks to Talia - Jane fears she’d lose her friend.
Cardinal Victor James
Appointed by the Holy See in Rome to be the Roman Pope's eyes and ears in the interfaith conferences that are held in the wake of the Second Time occurring, and all the conferences after it, Cardinal James is in agreement with the Muslim, Jewish, and Hindu members of the conference: the Second Time is signifigant, and can lead to more suicide pacts {like the ones which followed the rumor that the Second Time was triggered by death or coming close to death}. James is one of a few appointed by the Conference to represent them in the United Nations when discussion turns to the Second Timers.
Privately, the Cardinal offers prayers to God, thanking Him that Victor did not become young - he doubts he could avoid a return to his violent and ungodly youth.
Nadia Quinn
An Indo-Slavic-Iranian-American with probably more groups in her familiy tree, Nadia came to work for Jane once the investigation was handed over to the UN. Her self-appointed job is to find all commonalities, all points of interest that all of the Second Timers share, even if its opinions on their favorite cricketers or the weather.
Nadia's having a crisis right now, as she'd grown up helping take care of an old friend of her family - a friend who is now physically twenty-eight years old (Mira Furlan). Before, Nadia's life was purely work and help; she's not sure what to do now...Jane's suggested fish.
Jacob Gurion
Jacob knows better than anyone that the Second Timers are mortal - he was standing next to his now-younger great-uncle (Ian McKellen) when his great-uncle was stabbed to death in Israel by fellow Jews. Once he completed sitting shiva for his favorite relative, Jacob moved back to the neighborhood where his mother, grandmother, and great-uncle came from: Cochin, India. Once there, he comes under the gaze of Maliha (Reshma Shetty).
Before his great-uncle's death, Jacob was cheerful, resolute, and good at coming up with games. Now...now he's not so sure what to do.
Talia Clarke
CIA, maybe ex-CIA; she's not telling. But she's all over the world over the course of the season, keeping an eye on the Second Timers, and seeing if there's anything more on the horizon.
An old friend of Jane's, one who really doesn't like Mrs. Tanaka.
The Affected
Mrs. Tanaka
1st time around, Mrs. Tanaka was a dutiful housewife who from 1960 through the 1990s taught civics and history to highschoolers in Osaka, Japan, thanks to a a degree she obtained at the urging of her husband when he had returned from the Pacific. At the time, she felt that the war was not being implemented correctly - missed opportunities, inept underlings spoiling victory for the Emperor and commanders.
2nd time around, the widowed Mrs. Tanaka convinced her father to give her a suitable job at his manufacturing business - and he was surprised to find himself relegated to a figurehead role not long after.
While everyone is grateful to Mrs. Tanaka for steering the ship of business so well (and making supplies for allied armies worldwide, Japan first; an arms leader in the War On Terror), her granddaughter is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Considering what she'd heard growing up from the woman herself, Jane can forgiven for thinking that her grandmother is looking for loopholes and wiggleroom in the Japanese Constitution, before her rearming out-and-out breaks it.
Mrs. Lee
She fled North Korea in 1961, a painful experience which has taught her that "the past should not be repeated, not even to correct mistakes," an attitude which has made an enemy out of Mrs. Tanaka.
Mrs. Lee doesn't laugh often or for very long when she does laugh. That's not to say she doesn't have a sense of humor - if you know her, you know to watch for a smile, not listen for a laugh. And if you know her, you know how attentive she is: watching every little thing.
Mrs. Lee quietly supports Jane's efforts, but knows not to make too big a fuss out of it - she is, after all, also leading the call for the disbanding of the North Korean government.
Maliha Adrianna Balal
1st time around, she looked down on those of her family and friends who spent time gambling in the big cities. She had a few Untouchables she talked with from time to time.
2nd time around, she still looks down on gamblers - this time because she runs the places they bet in.
When, during an interview about her meteoric rise to riches, the reporter asked for Maliha’s opinion regarding the UN investigation into the cause of the Second Time, she was quoted in Newsweek (ep 2) as saying "I don't care what caused it - so long as it doesn't happen again."
Because of her hospitality and generosity to members of the Untouchable castes, not only is information quick to reach her ears, but she also has strong allies in Parliament (as opposed to the fair-weather friends).
Ara Fernali
Even if some nations would have preferred it otherwise, Ara is The Face the world thinks of when they think of those who have undergone the Second Time. And her country is proud of her.
Between the Iran-Iraq War and the battles with the Taliban, all but one of her children and near relatives are dead. This, combined with her strong conservative preferences, has made her the favorite of nearly every political party, making her election a sure thing.
Jane usually encounters Ara inside the United Nations building in New York, where Ara is friendly and happy to help her see what is happening.
Some reporters and analysts wonder if, in giving her such power, the Ayatollahs aren't creating a tiger they ultimately won't be able to control.
Quotes
* The character Nadia Castle was originally named Nadia Quinn.
* "It is His Work." "Please don't do that - I get enough of it from my mother-in-law." "She is devout?" "Oh yeah. Mormon." -Ara, Jane.
* "Another name that was bandied about at the idea table by the writers, was that, in addition to "Second Timers" and "Dechrons", you'd also hear what these people went through as "Cylonization" - since they essentially died in one body (though we could quibble over how close any of them got - and then were in a young body that was as good as new. That's why in episode 3, there's a scene where, if you don't blink, you can see a sign that says 'cylons go home'." -the Director.
* "Look at us, staring off against one another over a table." "Our mothers would be proud." "My mother would've smothered you. Likewise, I'm sure." "Yes." -Mrs.s Tanaka and Lee.
* "Why would I want to help you change things? Nothing needs changing - it all works just fine." -Maliha to Mrs. Tanaka.
* "One thing that worried us was that we'd given the impression that the degentrification process healed all physical wounds - that's false. So we deliberately included a scene (with Nicholas Cage who was a sport about it), with a Second Timer who had lost two-thirds of one leg on Iwo Jima." -the Director.
* "When we were done laying out ideas for Ara, suddenly it hit us: she was the Iranian Obama, appealing to just about everybody just by virtue of what she was." -the director, 'behind the scenes of 1st Time, 2nd Time.
* "A monsoon of feeling, a summer where I was prepared to shuck aside tradition and religion. And you left me. So what am I to do with your grand-nephew, hm?" -Maliha to a framed photograph of Jacob's great-uncle David.
* "So help me if you think my grandmother's hot now." "Nah, she still won't fit in your bikini." *throws her shirt at him* -Jane, Matt.
* "You thought to steal from me? I know what siphoning funds looks like, back when. And these aren't the hands to make chapatis and straighten your hat; no, these are the hands that will snuff you out like an old candle." -Maliha.
