Reccer's notes: Written for snickfic's comment meme, this is a story set in a world where monsters live among us, and rent apartments and ride bikes in the rain. It is quite, quite charming. Julie is a somewhat antisocial gnome, and Jensen is a merman; Jared also makes an appearance (the tiniest part Troll), as does Gen (a symbiont with a demon). It's a little snippet of a world that sounds fascinating; one of those stories that you read and think, yes, I would cheerfully read an enormous quantity more of this. There may even BE more, at some point, so hooray for everything. :)
Jensen stood on her sidewalk dressed in jeans and a t-shirt despite the chill of the spring night. He wore flip-flops instead of shoes. But at least he had on real clothes, unlike the last two times she'd seen him.
He also had a bicycle, and he kept a steadying hand on the seat while he waved at her with the other. "Hi," he said, flashing her a quick smile. "No, the apartment's good-fine. Thank you for finding it. I came to see you, actually."
She shifted in the doorway, still a little uneasy. She worked with the placement office because they'd really helped her when she first came to town, knowing no one and having very little idea how to live in a city, but she stayed because she was a good fit for the agency. Monsters who wanted to pass as human often latched onto their caseworkers as their only friends - any port in a storm - and they sometimes got a little too attached. No one got attached to Julie. She was strictly business and not very nice, besides.
