1. I got the DJ job I discussed in my last post, on sheer musical knowledge and youth appeal alone. My boss is a man in his late middle ages named Derek - apparently he used to sing for The Drifters and some other people and now he performs around Omaha - and I met him last Wednesday night after my Creative Spirit class at a pizza place downtown. I met one of his DJs there, Magic, and he & Derek talked me through some of the equipment and about the jobs I might get. I said I'm free on Friday & Saturday nights; Saturday nights are generally for private engagements like weddings and parties and those make more money, Friday nights, I'll most likely do a regular set at a bar out west close-ish to where I live.

Last night, Tiffy & I went out shopping at Kohl's and then stopped at another pizza joint out west where I met and chatted with another of Derek's DJs, a nice guy named Corey. He basically let me know that Derek can be a bit unreliable at times and the equipment can also be dodgy, so it's best that I bring my own music and headphones and come early to see what kind of mixers and sound systems I'll be working with on a given night. He was very helpful and I probably learned more talking to him for 45 minutes than I did from Derek the other night. My training basically consists of going to as many of Derek's DJs as possible (he gave me a list of who plays when/where) for advice and instructions and then to let him know when I'm ready, whereupon he'll set me up at the bar he's got planned for me. Corey told me that this bar is particularly flaky and wants a new DJ every 6 months, so I shouldn't feel bad when they tire of me. Good to know. Anyway, I'm excited! I should be making $65ish a week just doing one Friday night set, plus random Saturday night engagements, which will more than likely give me more than $100. Awesomesauce.

2. Everyone's been talking about McCain's VP candidate and after some lurking around the internet/browsing my other friends' entries, all I can add is that Sarah Palin is a terrible liar. We definitely don't need any more liars in office (not that that can ever be truly avoided - at the best, a president will just sugarcoat things), but I really don't think we need one who comes up with such outrageously tall tales concerning things that don't even matter, like her 16-year-old child being pregnant out of wedlock. Like it's 1953 or something! Lord.

Also, McCain looks like a potato. Every time I go to his Wikipedia page, I'm struck by the lumpiness of his head. POTATO MAAAAN.

3. On a more fun note, David Byrne and Brian Eno have joined forces once again and released a new album! It is called Everything That Happens Will Happen Today and you should click the picture below and go listen to it for PHREE on the INTERNETS. If you give them your e-mail address, they will send you a cordial e-mail with a link to a free mp3 of "Strange Overtones."

David Byrne (L) and Brian Eno (R).
In case you weren't aware, they're weird!

In even MORE fun news, David Byrne is taking his crazy butt on the road (sadly without Eno, but I imagine it's hard for Eno to get away from his post as Secret Ruler Of The Universe) with a bunch of dancers and his tour is stopping in Omaha on October 17th! I'm trying to encourage my lovely sister waves_of_pants to accompany me to this event, because it will be AMAZING.

4. Also, I'm seeing NIN in Council Bluffs in November. The night before Thxgiving, too, which should be funny. "Morning, Mom! Last night, I baked two pies and danced to industrial rock with a bunch of would-be goth kids!" lulz. I still haven't bought The Slip, Reznor's latest album, on CD because 1) I have it all on mp3 from THE INTERNETS, and 2) I still haven't really listened to it on mp3. It's kind of boring. I like it more when he's got conspiracy theories and disco sounds.

5. I've been to all my classes now. I'll keep them. I'm just so bored of school that I don't really want to GO to any of them except Digital Synthesis. Miles's classes are taking their toll on me because I think I'm just really tired of that man after 3 straight semesters with him. And literature classes are kind of boring. Oh, well.

Happy Labor Day! If you're American, anyway. Yeah.

I like hard-boiled eggs. They make tasty sandwiches when combined with mustard and mayonnaise. And I finally have mastered the boiling-eggs technique! Go, me.
