Favorite male character

Although I think this is expecting a singular sort of response... there's just no way I can do that, so fasten your seatbelts and get ready for a rollercoaster of my favourite male characters. The list is limited by only three factors: a) only TV, no film; b) only characters I really love; c) only anything that comes into my head in the next five minutes (there may therefore be key ommissons). Each one gets a brief description, including something physical. Here goes, in no particular order (though, incidentally, the first one might just be the single answer if that's what you're looking for!):

Sam Tyler, Life on Mars: sweet, clever, pleasantly sarcastic, utterly vulnerable, beautiful out-of-time police officer with a great jacket who has a rather unique capacity to make me cry.

Gene Hunt, Life on Mars: rough, brash, bigoted 70s copper, who is nevertheless warm, loyal, funny and inexplicably sympathetic; great coat, plus gloves.

Guy of Gisborne, Robin Hood: dark, defensive, put-upon, wrong-footed henchman whose flashes of charm and warmth are well worth waiting for and create lovely layers of complexity; excellent tase in (black leather) clothes.

Much, Robin Hood: sweet, kind, loyal, generous, honest, loving sidekick, who has broken my heart all too many times; you get fond of the hat.

Allan a Dale: double-dealing, all-too-charming trickster, who is seemingly incapable of honesty or complete loyalty, but who nevertheless is a strong, loving friend when needed; looks best in black leather but good in anything.

Bodie, The Professionals: strong, dark, quick, brave, highly trained CI5 operative with a disarming cheeky smile, and a tendency to lark about in the face of danger; of everyone on this list, probably the most physically and emotionally attractive, and usually clad in appealing late 70s/early 80s clothes that invariably involve ever-so-tight trousers.

Lucas North, Spooks: dark, troubled, (literally) tortured, tattoed MI5 agent with some serious issues, who always strikes me as one of the more convincing Spooks characters; should wear that long coat from 7x01 more often.

Malcolm Wynn-Jones, Spooks: quiet, gentle, Q-like MI5 analyst who has an encyclopadeic knowledge of weapons and gadgets; utterly adorable polymath who might not get in on the action most of the time but is absolutely central to the success of mission after mission nevertheless; nice mac.

Zafar Younis, Spooks: confident, cheeky, rather athletic, martial-artsy MI5 agent who added a lovely light-hearted note to series 4-5 but ultimately broke my heart; very snappy dress sense.

Harry Pearce, Spooks: posh, principled, stubborn head of MI5 counter-terrorism with a nice line in sarcasm even at serious moments; sometimes wears black gloves.

Matthew King, Emmerdale: at his best (though soaps are notoriously inconsistent in character portrayal), a proud, sarcastic, unscrupulous, ruthless businessman, something of a loner, fiercely loyal to his family when not fighting with them, with a brilliant dead-pan sense of humour and a cracking smile; long black coats, snazzy suits and just occasionally black gloves.

Ninth Doctor, Dr Who: deep, lonely, sometimes dark Timelord who can charm you instantly with that beautiful smile and contageous enthusiasm, really should have had longer in the TARDIS; fantastic jacket (which I've seen in person, incidentally!).

Eleventh Doctor, Dr Who: (it's almost too early to say this, but...) fresh-faced but strangely old, thoughtful, sometimes angry Timelord, who is already working his way into my affections; bow-ties are cool.

The Master (as played by John Simm), Dr Who: playful, attractive, deranged, villainous Timelord, driven mad by the sound of drums in his head through no fault of his own, manages to be appealing in spite of the evil, plots world domination in serious style; the coat with the red shiny lining, accompanied by gloves? Oh yeah...

Connor, Roar: deep-thinking and reluctant but utterly heartfelt hero (played by the late Heath Ledger) who was never quite tough enough to be a leader but nevetheless was so dedicated to his mission (to free his people - the Irish - from Roman rule) that he was willing to sacrifice everything for it; wore Xena-esque faux leather gear.

David Vincent, The Invaders: intelligent, strong, principled architect who accidentally became the only person to be aware of an alarming alien invasion and tried to let the world know what was happening; 60s US suits, and often accompanied by bad SFX.

David Banner, The Incredible Hulk: another one who could make me cry, a scientist who, due to a freak accident, became a sort of were-Hulk, which often came in handy for fighting various forces of evil; but his driving force was always to understand and control/expel his inner beast, a Sisyphian task that was nicely underlined by an incredibly sad soundtrack; sometimes green.

Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: bad vampire with a nice line in biting humour (sorry), but eventually a fully rounded sympathetic character who just wanted a soul, and Buffy; a bit... platinum blond cyberpunk.

Iolaus, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys: loyal but stubborn sidekick with an eye for the ladies, went through a lot for Herc, sometimes quite heart-breaking; anachronistic little jacket thing with nothing underneath, and leather pants.

Jarrod Berkley, The Big Valley: good, kind, strong, occasionally gun-slinging lawman, the most attractive of the Berkley brothers; nice stetson.

Christopher Foyle, Foyle's War: sharp, quiet, beautifully understated police officer who tackles crime with calm reason, underpinned by a strong moral code, who always gets his man; nice hat.

OK, OK, I have to stop, or I won't get any work done again ever. Can you imagine how many people I could add to this list if I thought about every show I've ever fangirled? Will someone please slap me? (Preferably Bodie - just about the one person I wouldn't mind being slapped by.)
