I spent my three-day weekend grinding away on my new laptop (Kubuntu 9.04). The project was to get my data off my old laptop (Mandriva 2009.0) then convert it over to Windows so my daughter can play her educational software. I had to teach myself about NFS. I tried various gui-based utilities to deal with it, then I had my big "DUH!!!" moment.

A week ago I upgraded my $50 laptop from Mandriva 2009.0 to Mandriva 2009.1. Doing so hopelessly broke the network. I am missing a piece of software called "nl80211". This piece of software is new to the wireless configuration and settings. It sets the regulatory domain code thus allowing the wireless settings to be fully IEEE compliant ( Read more... )

Don't get me wrong. I like SuSE, but they broke a media player that comes with KDE called Noatun. All media formats default to playing on this player. However, if I run it, it just hangs. It doesn't matter if I play an mp3 or an mpeg, a wav or an avi; nothing plays ( Read more... )
