today i rented a 2008 harley davidson ultra classic. a very large and heavy american touring cycle. i took my dad as a passenger over 200 miles of new mexico's cities and countryside.
there's plenty of funky little towns out here. the junk cars and bizarre little cafes make for a very unique backdrop. it's as if all the white trashiness of the east coast is somehow made artistic in a desert backdrop. we rode from albuquerque along the historic route 66 and then north through madrid (where parts of easyrider were filmed) up to santa fe where we ate at a mexican restaurant called mucho gusto. we took part of the old santa fe trail south where we found wide open grasslands spotted with ranches every few miles. there was also some rain to endure, not quite enough to present danger but enough to be annoying and fall between sunglasses and eyeballs at 60 mph (stings!).
there's an almost mythological element of america out here. something you see on television or in movies or textbooks. you'll say "yeah that's my country" apart from the confined fairfield county suburban living that seems to consume you in retail and advertisement. it's neat out here, but this is still only one corner of my country. i thought i could move here, but it's only made me realize how much more im probably missing out on.
