Yes, I did watch Captain America again last night. Steve Rogers' FACE. Peggy o' my heart! And hello, Bucky Sebastian Stan, you bastard!, get in my bed! And why is no one writing stories about the Howling Commandos fighting with Captain America and getting drunk every night and having arguments about everything under the sun, from philosophy to which starlet is the hottest, during every battle? These are necessary things, I think.
So despite getting a flu shot that made my arm hurt for two weeks, I am still getting sick. Granted, it's more of a cough and cold than the actual flu, but still, wahhhh! Half my office is out sick with the flu, so it was inevitable that I'd get some kind of sick too. I'm just like that. Sigh.
I am going to gargle with salt water, nap a lot, and NyQuil my ass into oblivion, and hope I get better. I am not going to be sick for Christmas this year, dammit. I am going to be well and have a good time and YOU CAN'T STOP ME, FLU.
Firstly, Cee, your (very belated) birthday gift is almost ready. Expect something in the next few days. ♥
Secondly, I have finished reading Frail by Joan Frances Turner. I read it during my breaks, I read it at home, I slacked off of work for a bit to read as much of it as I could because it was completely amazing and terrifying and heartbreaking. What I love about this book, and this series in general, is that it's about (supposed) monsters with souls, zombies with memories and regrets, people doing desperate, awful things to survive in a world that changes reality with each passing moment.
Frail is really interesting because there's a question of what makes a person a, well, person. Is it memory? Is it being able to talk? Is it being able to feel emotion, and does that emotion count if the monsters can't articulate it out loud? And what if you don't fit in with the rest of humanity, does that make you less than human as well, even though you are physically human? Plus, the characters are fierce and compelling, and some of them just wreck you with their stories (the whole scene with Mrs. Acosta and Amy just made me choke up so hard). Even with characters that you want to punch in the throat, there are some painfully human moments about them that make you ache for everything they've lost.
The language itself is really stark in some places, which feels like an emotional punch to the gut, but overall, the writing is beautiful and fits in with the tone of the story. And the ending makes me want the third book to be released RIGHT NOW so I can find out the answers to all the questions.
In short, I made a fanmix because what else was I going to do? According to Jen, it sounds like "a road trip through hell. Riding in a Cadillac." I hope the rest of you agree. In a good way.
Mediafire download, rar files, graphics included. If you don't want to be spoiled for the book, don't click on the cut-tag; otherwise, knock yourself out. And the Blue Shadows and Purple Hills track was because Spartacus (the Kirk Douglas movie) imprinted on me at a young age, and I've always thought it was the most beautifully sad, poignant love song I'd ever heard. Nothing's changed my mind so far.
