Date: 20 August 1999 Characters: Reed 'RB' Bradley, Terry Boot Location: Duncan's Barber Shop in Diagon Alley Status: Public Summary: Reed is getting his hair cut. Maybe. Possibly. He's not sure. Completion: Complete
Terry didn't like his hair short, but he didn't like it this shaggy either. Right now, it was pretty damn shaggy, and with a visit to Bristol coming up this weekend, he decided it might be time to visit the barber shop in Diagon Alley.
He'd been sitting in the waiting area with two other blokes when he recognised the next bloke who came in.
"Long time no see, Bradley," he said with a laugh. "So you're going under the knife too?"
"Hey, Boot," Reed said in greeting. "I'm thinking about it but... Is this sort of thing safe? I've only had Muggle haircuts before." One of the other blokes looked at him like he was crazy but RB ignored him.
"I have a second interview tomorrow and I want to look presentable," and not like a carved goose.
Reed looked at Boot's shaggy mop, "Dunno. Not sure you've had it done enough to reassure me, mate." Actually, it did make him feel better but it was too good an opportunity to take the mickey.
"Hebrides Dragon Reservation as a Resource Specialist. It's mostly grounds keeping and animal husbandry. I'm looking to train as a Magizoologist but I need to work unless I want to keep living in Muggle London with my parents," he told him.
Duncan, the barber, dusted off the customer whose haircut was just finished. Terry watched as the bloke two seats down from him moved to the now-empty barber chair. The bloke, an older wizard with a longish gray beard, instructed Duncan to "take a little off the sides and two inches only off the beard".
"I reckon you'll just have to try it and hope the flying shears don't scare the nuts off you," he teased.
Bradley's news was quite a surprise. "Dragon reservation, yeah? That's interesting." Terry wasn't sure he knew any Ravenclaws who'd gone into Care of Magical Creatures; he was still a bit shocked that Goyle was doing that stuff. "You're a braver man than I, y'know? No way I'd ever get near a dragon. Three-year-olds blowing up toilets, I can handle. But dragons? I'll pass." Not even the Carrows could have tortured him enough to make him want to work with something that could incinerate him.
"Not helping," Reed crossed his arms over his chest and scowled. Now he had to suck it up and do it.
"It'll be awhile before I'm allowed near dragons, I reckon since I'm not learning how to keep them straight off." Reed had considered applying to train as a Dragon Keeper but he wanted to take a broader view.
"What are you doing these days?" He heard he was seeing Lisa Turpin but didn't know if that was still going on.
Terry nodded as Bradley explained what he wanted to do. "Ah, so it'd be sort of like an apprenticeship," he observed. "Sounds sort of like what I did last year during the NEWT course. Except with dragons."
He smiled. "Accidental Magic Reversal Squad. Trainee, that is. At least 'm not just a file clerk anymore; I get to help with reversals now. And when I'm not working I hang out with my mates. Speaking of which, d'you like to swim? There's a beach party up in Yorkshire on August 31st. You're welcome to come, if you want."
"No, not really. I don't have the galleons to do an apprenticeship. I have to work full-time but saving for it's a goal. But it's a decent job outdoors, which was really important to me, and it'll get me going in the right direction. Assuming I get it. I reckon a haircut won't hurt my chances," assuming he didn't lose an ear.
"That's an interesting line of work. Must see all sorts of odd things. Do you end up working nights and weekends? I imagine accidents can occur any time." Boot asked about swimming and a party. "Yeah, I do like to swim when I get the chance. I'd love to come if I'm not working."
"What I did last year was really an internship," Terry said, correcting himself. "We got paid, though not much, and we worked half-time while taking NEWT courses. You're right, a haircut won't hurt your chances. 'S good that you're having a second interview, yeah? Must mean they're at least considering you pretty strongly
( ... )
"I don't want to jinx it by saying it's in the bag or anything but the bloke I'm interviewing with tomorrow is someone I've talked to a lot and exchanged letters with. He's been really encouraging, so I'm hoping." His first interview had been mostly background and checking NEWT scores and routine things. He had high hopes for tomorrow.
"That's not too bad, especially if they give you a bonus if you have to go out on calls during those nights and weekends," he said.
"It is. No one's lost a body part yet, so I reckon it is safe enough." Somehow he still wasn't sure a Wronski Feint or Bludger to the head wouldn't be less dangerous but he was toughing it out. The bloody dementors didn't beat him, it wasn't going to let a barber shop do it.
Bradley was definitely excited about the prospect of getting this job. "Sounds like you've got him on your side already and he just has to see you again to make his decision final," he observed. "So good luck to you again."
Terry shook his head. "No bonus in terms of pay," he said. "'m hoping I can get a bit of time added to my holiday hours once I've been there six months."
"Safe enough considering," he added. "Being around dragons must be exciting, but I reckon most people wouldn't call it safe. Good thing there're people like you and Goyle who like this sort of thing."
"Yeah, I reckon I am," Terry said as he moved to the empty chair.
A smiling Duncan, the proprietor, covered Terry's shoulders in a slick cape, tying it round his neck with a charm. "And what can I do for you today, Mr Boot?" he asked.
"A couple inches off all round," said Terry as Duncan took out a stiff brush and began brushing Terry's hair. "Just enough so it doesn't look too shaggy."

He gave Bradley an appraising look. "Second interview, yeah? So where is it? What sort of job?"

Honestly, it didn't seem all that bad in here any more.
