"What I did last year was really an internship," Terry said, correcting himself. "We got paid, though not much, and we worked half-time while taking NEWT courses. You're right, a haircut won't hurt your chances. 'S good that you're having a second interview, yeah? Must mean they're at least considering you pretty strongly."

Terry nodded. "Strange isn't the half of it. We work regular hours, Monday to Friday, but we take turns being on-call evenings and weekends." He was now wondering what would happen the weekend of the 31st. Lisa would be at Redcar the night of the 30th, and Terry planned to be there the night of the 31st. He should probably ask one of the other trainees if they could cover those two nights, or maybe volunteer for the 30th himself so he'd be free for the 31st.

"That's brilliant, mate. I'll let Lisa know you're coming. And feel free to bring a friend or a date." He mentioned Lisa's address and explained how the guests would be Apparated to Redcar. "Just be there at half-four on the afternoon of August 31st."

Another barber chair opened up and the last bloke ahead of Terry in the queue, a man with wispy blond hair, got into the empty chair. "Moving right along..." he said to Bradley.

"I don't want to jinx it by saying it's in the bag or anything but the bloke I'm interviewing with tomorrow is someone I've talked to a lot and exchanged letters with. He's been really encouraging, so I'm hoping." His first interview had been mostly background and checking NEWT scores and routine things. He had high hopes for tomorrow.

"That's not too bad, especially if they give you a bonus if you have to go out on calls during those nights and weekends," he said.

"It is. No one's lost a body part yet, so I reckon it is safe enough." Somehow he still wasn't sure a Wronski Feint or Bludger to the head wouldn't be less dangerous but he was toughing it out. The bloody dementors didn't beat him, it wasn't going to let a barber shop do it.

Bradley was definitely excited about the prospect of getting this job. "Sounds like you've got him on your side already and he just has to see you again to make his decision final," he observed. "So good luck to you again."

Terry shook his head. "No bonus in terms of pay," he said. "'m hoping I can get a bit of time added to my holiday hours once I've been there six months."

"Safe enough considering," he added. "Being around dragons must be exciting, but I reckon most people wouldn't call it safe. Good thing there're people like you and Goyle who like this sort of thing."

Another chair came free and it was Terry's turn. "Looks like you're up, mate."

Honestly, it didn't seem all that bad in here any more.

"Yeah, I reckon I am," Terry said as he moved to the empty chair.

A smiling Duncan, the proprietor, covered Terry's shoulders in a slick cape, tying it round his neck with a charm. "And what can I do for you today, Mr Boot?" he asked.

"A couple inches off all round," said Terry as Duncan took out a stiff brush and began brushing Terry's hair. "Just enough so it doesn't look too shaggy."

Duncan nodded. "As you wish."
