"...And I can't get her to stop writing. She's nice, but I just..." Anthony trailed off and reached for his butterbeer, taking a long swig. He set it back on the coffee table and watched a bead of condensation roll down the glass bottle.

"You just?" John prompted.

Anthony shook his head. "I just don't want to date girls."

John laughed. "And that's your big confession? My god, Anthony, I've known that since I met you. I guess I'm just glad you finally figured that out."

Anthony ducked his head to hide his smile. "You sort of helped me figure it out, you know. That night." He knew that John knew which night and that he didn't need to elaborate.

John chuckled. "Even if I did scare the piss out of you."

"You didn't!" Anthony swatted at him. "I was shocked, that's all!" John laughed and swatted back, and when Anthony moved to swat John a second time, John caught Anthony's wrist in his hand.

They locked eyes, and Anthony's smile faltered.

"You're one of my best mates," said John, rather apropos of nothing, Anthony thought.

Anthony nodded. Why had his breath gone all funny? "You're one of mine." He licked his lips. "You and Malcolm are still--"

"Split, yeah. For good this time. Officially 'off' with no more 'on'. I told you that." John still held Anthony's wrist, and he tightened his grip on it.

Anthony swallowed hard against the sudden obstruction in his throat. He took off his glasses with his one free hand and set them next to his butterbeer on the coffee table.

"Okay, then," he breathed.

He closed the space between them and pressed his mouth to John's, his breathing shallow, his heart threatening to beat out of his chest.

And John kissed him back, opening his mouth to deepen the kiss, pulling Anthony closer, and Anthony trembled.

When they broke the kiss, Anthony looked at John with half-lidded eyes, blinking to clear his blurred vision. John looked as surprised and as satisfied as Anthony felt.

John's voice was husky when he spoke. "Not going to run away this time?"

Anthony just shook his head and sank into John's embrace and kissed him again.

He could worry later.
