Back from the doctor's office, or, how I am surviving my morning so far!

Today is our turn to bring a snack for Samantha's pre-school.  For some reason, I just can't bring myself to simply go out and buy stuff.  In December, Samantha and I made sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies.  This time, I decided to make chocolate chip muffins.  (I was inspired by a new Costco cupcake carrier.  I would have made them last night, but I had my yoga class.  Samantha doesn't have pre-school until 12:00, but Christopher had a check-up scheduled for 9:00 this morning.

So this morning, after getting the kids dressed, and while feeding them breakfast, I made the batter, doubling the recipe to make enough for a class of 16.  I ran out of AP flour, so they are half bread flour.  I ran out of semi-sweet chocolate chips, so they are half milk chocolate chips.  It's lucky that I bought plain yogurt and confectioner's sugar last time I was at the store, just on a whim!  (Yes, yogurt.  For some reason, this particular muffin recipe book loves yogurt.)

Have you ever had something happen that was terrible for the person it happened to, but a blessing for you?  In the midst of mixing and substituting and multiplying, the doctor's office called.  The pediatrician has the stomach flu and called in sick.  But, they could see me with a different doctor instead.  I like the other doctor just fine, and the extra 15 minutes was a godsend.  But I do feel terrible for the regular doctor.

We got to the doctor's office on time (for the new time.) and I had all my medical paperwork ready for the kids to go to school next year.  Usually, you have to pick it up a few days later, but they were able to fill it all out today!  (Big yay!)  I took my Nintendo DS, and the kids had a good time playing with the picture-altering software while we were waiting in the exam room.

The doctor's visit went well.  When the nurse asked if Christopher has any allergies, I mentioned that he throws up violently after eating lima beans.  The doctor though this was serious enough to warrant blood work and a visit to an allergy specialist.  I really don't want to take him to have blood drawn.  That is not my idea of fun.  BUT, it would be good to know if he is allergic to anything else, so we'll do it.  (I keep thinking of my cousin Jonathan who had all kinds of things done while he was undergoing his cancer treatment, and I feel like a big wuss.)

Samantha came along so she could get her second H1N1 shot, and Christopher got his first one.  Samantha has become very, very scared of shots.  I feel bad for her because I was the same way at her age.  (I remember running away from my poor pediatrician one time.)  I tried to give her a demonstration of how it hurts less if your arm is relaxed, which made sense to her, but she still got panicky about it.  Christopher was fine, even though Samantha went first and cried like her arm was being amputated!

The muffins are yummy, if a little tough.  (Because of the bread flour maybe?)  Now I'm just watching the rain and waiting until I can take Samantha to pre-school, put Christopher down for his nap, and go do a walk/run on the treadmill.  (And maybe clean the house a bit.)
