Aka ways not to start a morning:
Hearing your mother scream your name and that she needs your help, running down the stairs and finding blood spurting out of the place where your sister's trach is supposed to be.
So, that was fun. Carrie's trach got ripped out, it was a total accident and actually is fairly common, but Carrie's situation being what it is, we still had to go to the ER. I got to ride in the front of the ambulance while Carrie remained the calmest out of all of us.
They're keeping Carrie at the hospital while they debate on whether they should put her original size 6 trach back in, or keep the size 4 Carrie has in now (the one my mother put in out of sheer panic, and the awesome guidance of a nursing supervisor over the phone). The reason they had to admit Carrie is that in order to do the trach change, because of the trauma from earlier today, they have to sedate her. And when you sedate Carrie, well, it gets to be life-or-death.
The damnable part is, besides the obvious, you know, trauma, is that Carrie has been doing so well, down to 1 liter to a .5 liter O2, that her doctors probably WANT her to go down to a size 4 trach. There's just no way to know that.
So, yeah, Carrie is in the hospital now, probably over night, even though her stats are wonderful, there is nothing on her chest x-Rays, she's coughed up all the blood, and her only issues are that she's really pissed off from being in the hospital. Joy.
Mom's still there, I was sent home b/c it was 5:30 and I'd not eaten a thing all day. Now all we can do is sit and wait. Le sigh.
2011, you're beyond being on notice and can so very much kiss my ass.
EDIT: Carrie came through the trach change fine, now she's in recovery being observed. Mom's hoping she'll be discharged by 1am.
EDIT 2: Carrie's home! A little drugged out, but understandably so. Now we just see how the overnight goes.
