a day well spent...

I skipped class today to hang at home with The Boy. I think I made the right call. As much as I miss The Girl, there are topics that we rarely discuss when she is around. Today it was just he and I, so we covered a good deal of Mature Topics.
I must say I am rather pleased with myself, because we were also able to address several Important Topics that one must inevitably address with one who now self identifies as a “pre-teen”. I kept my head together though. We discussed safe sex and the risk of STIs without being scary and broached the subject of masturbation without getting creepy. There were of course a couple of multi-syllabic utterances of “MOM”, but not a single “ew!”, so I guess I didn’t skeeve him out too much. When all was said and done (for the time being) I asked if he would rather I initiate awkward conversations about sex or just not talk to him about it at all. (This was, of course, completely hypothetical). My Boy assured me that as awkward as it was, he appreciated the fact that I initiated these conversations. So, good times indeed.
Later, while we were making dinner, he said to me, “in my cartoon,[he wants to be a cartoonist when he grows up] I’m going to create a gay hero. There aren’t any gay heroes and we need one.” Huzzah! Times like this convince me that I am doing okay with this parenting thing.
I know there are a few folks who read this who are into the fandom, so answer me this: is it indeed true that there are no gay heroes out there? It seems quite possible to me, but I know teh internets are chock full of independently produced comics and cartoons. If you know of any pre-teen appropriate comics out there that feature gay heroes, please point us in that direction. Much thanks in advance.
