Since I don't intend to live in this house forever and I happen to have a little extra energy today I am taking care of some much needed yard work. If I did this every weekend I'd probably be healthier. *sigh*
So far I've removed old rusty steel edging from two old beds, folded them to garbage can size and dragged them out of the way. One is in the trash, but the other is too heavy for me to lift, so its sitting next to the garbage can. There's also one stake still stuck in the ground. I tried to get it out, but felt an unhealthy strain in my back and stopped. When Lawrence comes over, he can dump the edging in the garbage and get that stake out of the ground.
I have also raked the beds and made piles of leaves (with a healthy dose of unwanted rocks). After a lunch break I will get the leaves to the compost pile and hopefully still have enough energy to turn the compost.
These two beds are being cleaned out so that I have enough room to walk around a 10' x 12" raised garden bed which I will start building next weekend. The spot for the garden bed is a large area of my backyard where grass will not grow. I think that the grass doesn't grow there because of the strong sunlight in that part of the backyard. The rest of the yard is shaded by a live oak, crepe myrtle, several rose of Sharon trees and an ornamental pear. Of course the reason it won't grow could be something in the soil, we have top dressed with composted manure and it didn't help. If course there was grass there when I first bought the house, but it dissapeared after the first winter.
I will have to build a walkway on one side to make sure that I can get the trash carts and lawnmower around and out through the gate to the side yard and alley. The spot is kind of awkward to plan around, but it is the only spot with enough sunshine to grow a garden.
Lunch break is over, back to work.
