 Holy cow, guys.  I am actually attempting to make something pretty with paint.net.  I'm using blends and gradients and it's terrifying. It's also crap, but hey, you have to start somewhere, right?  I'm making it for a whedonland graphics contest, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I like it, at any rate.
