MAGGIE IS NOMINATED FOR A GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD! YAYZ!
I found out about it this morning thanks to
corellianjedi, who linked to a list with all of the nominations. I would have totally made a big squee post right then and there if I didn't have to get ready for school. Instead, I jumped up and down for a little bit, and then went to brush my teeth.
You all probably know that because of my love for Maggie, I was really hoping she would get some recognition from the various awards circuits, even though I knew that the odds were probably against her because Sherrybaby is such a tiny movie that not many people saw (myself included, but I will when it comes out on DVD!), and because of the steep competition. But then I heard a few weeks ago that she hadn't been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, I thought, okay, there goes that. Because if you're an independent movie and you're not even honored at the Spirit Awards, what hope do you have for the big mainstream awards? But alas, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association came through!
And dude, have you seen who is in her category? Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, and Kate Winslet, all of whom are amazing in their own right. Do you know who she had to beat out to be nominated? According to Entertainment Weekly, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, and Nicole Kidman, for starters. Maggie is grouped with an amazing group of actresses, and it makes me so happy for her! Also, Kate Winslet called Maggie to congratulate her, EEP!
Most, if not all, of the predictions for the Globes/Oscars say that Helen Mirren is going to win for The Queen, and you know what, I'm totally okay with that. The woman is a goddess, and she probably deserves it (I haven't seen this yet either *cries*). Who better to lose to?
Again, so happy! *dances the Snoopy dance*
Now, on to non-Maggie things:
-Matthew Perry, along with Jessica Biel and Rosario Dawson, was on hand to announce the nominees this morning, and he was nominated for an award himself for The Ron Clark Story, a made-for-television movie. I want video of his reaction NOW.
-I'm surprised that Babel was the most nominated film. I still badly want to see it (I loved Alejandro González Iñárritu's Amores perros), but I've heard a lot of mixed reaction for it. Maybe it's getting the recognition because it's this year's Crash. BUT, Crash wasn't that great of a movie (you can read my thoughts
here if you want).
-Clint Eastwood is nominated for Best Director for two movies about World War II in the same year? How does he have the time and energy to pull that off? Isn't he 70+? I get tired after only a couple hours of class each day! Also, is it really fair that a movie that hasn't even been released yet (Letters from Iwo Jima) can be nominated?
-Leonardo DiCaprio vs. Leonardo DiCaprio. Hmm. Should be interesting, although I've heard way more buzz about The Departed than I have for Blood Diamond. Apparently his South African accent in the latter comes and goes. But I think I want Peter O'Toole to win for Venus just because he's a funny old British man. Forest Whitaker will probably get it for The Last King of Scotland, though. I have to admit that I'm kind of cringing at the thought of his acceptance speech. I listened to him on KCRW's The Treatment radio show a while back, and I have to say, he's not the most articulate guy. He says "like" A LOT.
-Borat. Is it really that good, or just enormously hyped up? Because the Globes tend to be subject to trends.
-Beyonce? Really? No matter, she hasn't a chance in hell with Annette Bening and Meryl Streep in the running. God, is there anything that Meryl can't do?
-Chiwetel Ejiofor! For Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) and Best Actor (Mini-Series/TV Movie)! Oh, but his name is so going to be slaughtered by two different presenters. He's nominated with Bill Nighy in the latter as well. Others Brits nominated include Helen Mirren [Elizabeth I (watched this a few months ago, and it's really wonderful), and Prime Suspect, which I will get around to watching one of these days, AND The Queen as mentioned above] and Jeremy Irons, also for Elizabeth I. I'm digging all of this love for the English actors.
-I'm a bit surprised at the the nominees for Best Television Series - Drama. 24 and Grey's Anatomy, I would have guessed for sure, Lost because it won last year, but Heroes and Big Love? Over Battlestar Galactica and The Wire? See, if you've got to nominate a sci-fi genre show, it's got to be BSG, hands down. It's not even up for discussion. And I've only seen three episodes of the first season of The Wire, but they were great, and I heard that it only gets better from season to season. And it gets glowing reviews from EVERYONE. But I guess Big Love is just more buzz-worthy because of the polygamy topics...
-Hugh Laurie had better fucking win again. Same goes for Steve Carell, as both were totally shafted at the Emmys. Seriously, I will slit throats if Tony Shalhoub wins another award for Monk. You have many twitches and are germophobic, WE GET IT.
-Only two Housewives this time around = three open slots for people on more deserving shows! Normally I would take this time to gripe about Lauren Graham's absence from every Best Actress category for every television awards show, but by now it's to be expected, and Gilmore Girls just isn't what it used to be, sigh. A collective YAY! for Mary-Louise Parker and America Ferrera, however. While I love America and think she's the cutest thing ever, I've got to go with MLP. She does things on Weeds that take your breath away. "Dead in the Nethers" and that S2 episode where she confronts Megan's dad? Brilliance.
-Sarah Paulson for Studio 60. Hmmm. You guys know that I love this show, but I'm not sure whether it's worthy of any awards at this point. But I will say that she acts the hell out of some of the more ridiculous material she's given.
-Justin Kirk for Weeds vs. Masi Oka for Heroes. HARD. I've only seen the pilot for Heroes (but will watch the subsequent episodes soon to prepare for the Eccleston!) but I loved Masi in it. He's so adorable. But can his cuteness beat Uncle Andy's monologue about masturbation? NO, IT CANNOT NOT.
GUYS, I cannot believe I wrote as much as I did about this. But I just finished my finals today, so I don't give a flying fuck! Whee!
