Crap day. Also a meme!

Dec 23, 2010 19:57

this day has been shit. One of our close family friends had a stroke earlier this week and is in a coma. The stroke was located in his brainstem, so the outlook is not very good. Vadim is a terrific artist and we've known him and his wife for years. He did a sculpture of me when I was 18 and had started on one of my mom earlier this year. They are wonderful people, they've always been so great to us and everyone they know. It's just not fair.

And you know what else isn't fair? Another of my mom's friends, we'll call her D, has a crazy husband. Her husband has cheated her on multiple times (and that's just what D knows about) and because of this, he has always been convinced that D is cheating on him. She has never done so, but in all the years my mom has known her (about 17, she was my mom's first real friend when we moved to NC), D's husband has never, ever let her go out alone with my mom to a bar or a restaurant. He always insists on tagging along or he'll call every 10 minutes and accuse her of sleeping with someone else. Recently, it has gotten worse than ever. Yesterday, she went out Christmas shopping for his kids (he has grown kids from a previous marriage, they have one son together who is my age) and he called her 7 times to ask her what she was doing, where she was going and, again, accused her of cheating. When she got home, they got into it and he physically held her down and prevented her from going to bed. This was also after he had taken her Mercedes convertible out (D paid cash for it with her own money) and got stinking drunk. She wants a divorce immediately, but here's the kicker. D has worked at her company for 28 years. Since her boss died this year, she has been running it and it is a very successful company. She's always made more money than her husband and when she talked to her attorney, he told her that she would have to pay him alimony. Isn't that just a bunch of shit? I fucking hate it. Getting divorced in North Carolina is designed to fuck over the woman and help out the man, no matter what a piece of shit he has been. I really don't think I will ever get married because of shit like this. It's just not fair.

Ugh. Anyway for a different change of pace, I'm snagging that 2010 fandom meme I've seen floating around.
your main fandom of the year?
I suppose it was bandom. While my interests have officially diminished to TAI, Empires and Jon Walker pretty exclusively, I still follow most of the rest of bandom on twitter and stuff, but fannishly, I'm only about the aforementioned, really. If Parks & Rec had an actual fandom, it would be in second.

your favourite film watched this year?
I was trying to think of this last night and I'm not sure. Probably Deathly Hallows. Yeah, I'd say Deathly Hallows.

your favourite book read this year?
Eating the Dinosaur by Chuck Klosterman. I also read his first book, Fargo Rock City, for the first time and I really enjoyed it, as well. The final chapter has this great passage about how bands that you're into when you're 14 are the ones that truly shape your life and even though they, objectively, suck (because very rarely is anyone into good bands when they're 14) they're the ones that will always be your favorites. It's just the timing. And I think that's so true and it's why Incubus has, like, 7600 plays on my Last.FM.

your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Still Childish Gambino's Culdesac. I can't explain it but his album just struck me in a way that is very rare. My favorite song would be a tie between Cee-Lo's "Fuck You", Empires' "I Know You Know" and this new Adele song "Rolling in the Deep", which is so damn good I want to have sex with it.

your favourite TV show of the year?
Parks and Recreation, hands-down. I have lots of feelings about it. Community and the Venture Bros and the new season of Degrassi are all close seconds.

your favourite LJ community of the year?
Gonna be honest, I really love theacademyis. I don't post or anything over there but it's just a sweet, little community that never has any real drama and updates me on TAI stuff that I miss.

your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Again, probably Parks & Rec. I would love for there to be an actual Parks and Rec fandom, with tons of Ann/Leslie fic and April/Andy adorableness and shrines to Ron Swanson and meta posts about Tom's character and campaigning for more Donna in the show and pimping the importance of characters like Leslie Knope on television and just EVERYTHING. I would even be down with ship ways between Leslie/Ann and Leslie/Ben. But anyone who ships Leslie/Ron in a romantic way is wrong.

Runner-up: The Vampire Diaries! I am still so impressed with this show. It has no reason to be so good. It's a show about vampires on The CW, for fuck's sake. But it really is and is has a basically canon threesome. canon threesome. All they need is a threesome in Mexico storyline to make it even more perfect.

Which reminds me, Friday Night Lights is also a runner-up. it has a shitty fandom full of Tim/Julie fic (REALLY? REALLY?) instead of all the Tim/Lyla/Jason threesome in Mexico fic it should (or Matt/Julie. or Coach and Tami being awesome. Or Vince/Jess from the newer seasons) but it is just the best show on TV. No, really, it is.

your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
lol selfish but that any chance of there ever being new Jon/Tom or Butcher/Sisky fic has basically disappeared. Jon made most people mad (not me, really, but I get it. I think fandom's been a bit hard on him, personally, but I don't expect that to change. different strokes for different folks) and TAI was largely off the grid, in general. I'm still super worried about Siska's cat, though. :(

your TV boyfriend of the year?
Andy Dwyer, Troy Barnes, Tim Riggins. God, I have such a type.

your TV girlfriend of the year?
April Ludgate, Blair Waldorf, Leslie Knope and Julie Taylor, mostly because I overidentify with everything she does.

your biggest squee moment of the year?
Bandom wise, it's a tie between seen The Young Veins at Bonnaroo and seeing TAI in Knoxville. both shows were so much fun and I'm so thankful I got to see them.

TV wise, definitely April and Andy kissing in the finale of Parks and Rec. Let's not talk about what happened afterwards.

the most missed of your old fandoms?
Even though it's still around and I still care, I miss how bandom used to be. People move on, it happens, but I miss being really tight with more people and talking about silly fic ideas and being excited for fic exchanges just in case someone wrote one of my OTPs.

the fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I'm pretty happy with what I'm into right now, my shoeless bandom dudes, Parks & Rec, Community (and Community RPF, if it existed), etc., but the things I care about in said fandoms are not that popular. Nothing I ever like in any fandom is the main pairing or the fandom is super tiny, so I'm used to it. But there are a few shows I'd like to get into, like 30 Rock (I'm hopefully getting the first season for Christmas) and I'd like to catch up on Nikita. Also that British Misfits show looks pretty good.

your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Parks & Rec coming back in January, more Childish Gambino music, a new TAI album, following whatever Empires does and sending Tom Conrad more of my money, figuring out whatever the hell Jon Walker is up to and hoping his solo project has songs about his pets, Fiona/Adam happening on Degrassi, The Vampire Diaries doing a crossover with Gossip Girl where Klaus is one of the Klauses Lily married (a girl can dream), the final HP movie being amazing and both Community & Parks and Rec getting picked up for another season and being nominated for the Emmys they deserve. I have a lot of high hopes.
