I saw Black Swan tonight. Let's talk about it.
So, I thought the movie was incredible. The performances were excellent, the cinematography was extremely effective, the directing was stellar, it was just an incredibly well-made movie. Of course, it was also insanely intense and upsetting and I don't think I'd ever really want to see it again. Which probably speaks to how well-made it is, but it is still not a movie for everyone.
First things first, the part I was most excited to see, the Mila Kunis/Natalie Portman sex scene was worth the price of admission. Holy shit was Mila Kunis sexy in this movie. She's sexy in general, but damn, she was ultra sexy in this. I mean, seriously, watching her go down on Natalie Portman? Uh, yeah. I'm down with that. Also the masturbation scenes with Nina was also kind of hot but I feel bad for thinking that.
Natalie Portman really does deserve all of the acclaim she has gotten. Nina's fragility and repression is present in every pore of her character. Oh god and every scene with her mother freaked me the fuck out. They had such a bizarre, unhealthy relationship, it was captivating but also upsetting. God, every time she called Nina a "sweet girl"? SHIVERS.
As for the actual plot and the blurred reality, I found it pretty easy to follow, except for one scene I'm not sure on. When Nina visits Winona Ryder (I'm really glad she's making a comeback, btw) in the hospital and Beth stabs herself with the nail file, that really happened, right? Or not? I'm not sure. I know Nina washed her hands when she got home, but I couldn't tell if they were bloody. I suppose it doesn't matter if it was real or not, but I'm not sure if I missed something there or not.
(Also, random, but I loved the surprise!Carter Bazien. Sebastian Stan, who was also cast as Bucky in the Captain America movie, might have the power to be the only dude from Gossip Girl to have an actual acting career. Good for him.)
I absolutely loved the climax of opening night and Nina transforming into the Black Swan. Obviously, she had officially lost any grip on reality she had left, but holy shit, Natalie Portman acted the fuck out of that scene. Her dancing was incredible, you could really tell the difference between Nina's usual demeanor and dancing. I knew her death would be coming, as the White Swan kills herself at the end of the ballet, but everyone else's shock at it and Nina's last words of "Perfect. Perfect." was pretty upsetting. honestly, the movie is pretty upsetting from start to finish. It doesn't let go at all, it has you on pins and needles the entire time. Like, I don't think I really enjoyed it? But I still really liked it. If that makes sense.
If you haven't seen it and are uncomfortable with extremely intense, fucked up psychological movies, do not see this movie. Also, one of the characters has an eating disorder. It's a wonderful film, but I don't want anyone who might be upset or triggered by anything in it to go through that.
