Chapter Two)
"Blind?" Shige questioned. "But, how could she of noticed me if she didn't see me?"
"Hitomi-chan may be blind but she can recognize shadows of people." Koyama answered him. "Despite the fact she can't see, she can tell a person by other senses like the way they feel, smell, and sound."
"But despite the fact her name is 'Hitomi', she's blind. Isn't that kind of ironic?" Shige continued.
"Her mother named her that because when she was born, she thought she had the most beautiful eyes in the world." Ai replied.
Ai's got a point. Her eyes are really pretty... Shige thought to himself and blushed.
"Shige-chan, do you know a cellist by the name of 'Fumie Williams'?" Ai asked Shige to get his attention.
Since Shige has been playing guitar for at least ten years, he also studied music, which meant he learned about world-famous musicians, too. One day when he was in middle school, his father bought a CD by her so he has listened to her music before. "Yeah, kind of."
"That's Hitomi-chan's mother."
Shige's eyes widened. "Ehh!? Her mother's a world-famous musician!?"
Ai nodded. "Fumie Williams was a cellist who was half-British and half-Japanese. When she was only sixteen, she played in her first orchestra in London. While playing there, Fumie-san fell in love and got married to the maestro of her orchestra, Takikawa Hideyoshi-san. However, her father was completely against it. Six months after the marriage, she realized she was pregnant with Hitomi-chan and it made her father even more furious. But, on the day Hitomi-chan was born, Hideyoshi-san couldn't be there because of his busy schedule. He promised to come the next day. Unfortunately, that morning she got a phone call that Hideyoshi-san died in a car accident which made Fumie-san completely depressed. And after five years of depression, she committed suicide and Hitomi-chan was left in Fumie-san's father's, also known as her grandfather's, care."
"But...how did she become an orphan?" Shige asked.
"Well," Ai continued. "Hitomi-chan's grandfather despised her because of the fact she resembled Fumie-san so much. He physically abused her many times when she was little. One day, when she was eight years old and came home from school, Hitomi-chan's grandfather was aggravated that she came home late. She said that she was lost but he didn't buy it so he started to beat her up. But this time, he took a candle from the dining room table and poured the oil into her eyes, which is why she's blind. Before the oil got into her eyes, Hitomi-chan called the police immediately for help. After she hung up, the hot oil damaged her vision. As soon as it got into her eyes, the police broke in and arrested her grandfather, and that's why Hitomi-chan lives here."
Shige eyes drooped. He couldn't help but feel bad for Hitomi because of her miserable life. Then he realized something about her. Despite the fact she can't she, her piano skills were expertise. "Wait a sec, if she can't see, how come she can play the piano so well?"
Koyama shook his head. "We don't know why either. The piano in that room has always been there, even before she came here. But the minute I showed her the room, she sat down and played it perfectly. I asked her how long she has been playing but she replied with, and quote, 'Never. It's my first time touching a piano.'. It even shocked myself. But, Aibon and I came to a conclusion that it was heredity because her parents are music lovers. Ah, but now that you mention it, your probably the first one to listen to her play."
Shige cocked his head to the side. "What do you mean?"
"Well, whenever one of the other orphans or granny ask her to play for them, she balls up, slams the piano keys, and runs off into the bathroom. But when either me or Aibon asks, she plays it like there's no day tomorrow."
Shige nodded slowly. "I see..."
When Shige went back to his room, he found Hitomi on her bed, curled up into a ball. He knelt to her so that they were now at eye-level. "Hey, umm, I'm sorry for scaring you like that earlier so, can we start anew?" Shige raised his hand.
Hitomi nodded and shook his hand. "I'm Hitomi. Takikawa Hitomi. Umm, your Shigeaki-kun, right?"
"That's right." Shige smiled.
"Guitar."
Shige blinked. "Eh?"
"I heard a guitar playing before. Was that you?"
"Uh-huh."
Hitomi headed towards the piano and sat on the bench. "Can you play this, Shigeaki-kun?"
She started to press down the keys which produced a soft melody. Shige picked up his guitar, listened to the flow of the music, and started to strum the strings which sounded exactly the same to her piano. The two were making music.
Bleh. I can't think straight today so this chapter is kind of suckish. xP
Oh yeah, I wanna mention this before I forget.
The truth is, my second grade teacher is my model for Hitomi! ;D
That's because my mom recently told me that she was actually legally blind but I never knew when I was little.
When I asked her, "How could she tell it was me even though she was legally blind?"
Mom replied with, "She could notice shadows and tell you by her other senses."
So that's how I created Hitomi. Also, I gave her the name "Hitomi" because it means "eyes" in Japanese~ ^^
See you tomorrow (with hopefully a better chapter!)~
