So, despite the fact that I should have been reading this horrifically boring assignment for my Absolutism and Enlightenment in Europe class, I watched the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie ...
And it kind of stunk.
Don't get me wrong, though. There were some fairly interesting moments throughout, sufficient to keep my interest from completely waning. Once again, Cap'n Jack Sparrow was a hoot to watch (but then, Depp usually is. It's a sign of a truly great actor, I suppose, the ability to simply disappear into the character), and I loved the monkey, Jack, but compared to the nearly perfect first Pirates movie, this one stunk on ice. It was too over the top, I suppose - a failing that the second one had as well - and the plot ... the less I talk about the plot the better.
And can someone explain to me why we were supposed to be rooting for the rapists and murderers and thieves? The usual tripe about them being "free" or whatever it was that Elizabeth Swann spewed simply doesn't track if one has a modicum of historical knowledge in regards to pirates. But this is Hollywood, of course, and we all know that they live in a reality that isn't shared by the rest of us normal people.
Oh, and Keira Knightley really really needs to eat something. Like a couple dozen Big Macs.
