This bugs me

This morning walking to work I saw a poster for the upcoming movie Confessions of a Shopaholic. This type of film, in turn with movies like the recent Bride Wars bug the SHIT outta me.

Where is the Wonder Woman movie? Where are the Aliens with a kick-ass, protective Sigourney Weaver or the Terminator 2s with a seriously pumped-up and in charge ( Read more... )

wtf, personal rantings

Agreed 200%. I don't understand the popularity of chick lit or Sex in the City either. They're so at odds with both my experience and with anything I find admirable or identifiable. I'd rather have another Fifth Element.

I have been known to watch Ghost Whisperer occasionally because I think JLH is kind of hot though

I can't past the heaving cleavage of Jennifer Love Hewitt. And it's not the highest quality of writing, either.

Yeah, I don't get the whole Sex and the City thing. Meh.

Just a ditto from me. Those cheapie reality shows chill my blood with the kind of female images they're throwing up there. Add in the
'Paris Hiltons' that pass for role models and it's a stomach churner.

I haven't seen it, but how about "The Closer" with Kyra Sedgwick?

"Olivia Dunham" in Fringe - the 'new' Scully? Not quite.

I like the females in "Leverage" though Parker is, well, insane. Hmmm, I gotta think about that now.

I really like 'The Closer' and I love listening to Kyra Sedgwick's voice but I don't see her as an especially good role model. Unlike many other detective dramas, she has to have a live-in boyfriend, parents who want her to marry and other distractions from the job. None of the men in her team suffer from similar distractions (like possible early-onset menopause with mood swings, tears etc.) You could argue that she's a female character with female problems holding down a top job in a man's world but . . . I'm not sure about that one.
There is a real and recurring problem with depictions of women in TV shows (I don't see films).

Thank yew! LOL. I enjoy The Closer too.

I actually sympathize with Fritz sometimes, because she can be a bit high maintenance. But it seems to me they balance out her home life and work life fairly well, and for a woman who's not in her 20s and all that comes with. It's nice to see a mature woman dealing with the pressures of life, and also nice that it doesn't automatically mean problems of children and home.

It's nice to see a mature-ish woman at all *g*

However, she has a ditzy mother, a long-suffering father and they both pop up at work which doesn't happen to any of the male team members. Neither do any of the male team members seem to have a life outside work . . . I'm just not sure about it. It's not that it's a bad thing, as such, to give her a top job and a male love interest and problems house-hunting etc. because of the job, it's just that the men don't get similar treatment (in this or any other show I can think of - Grissom had an affair with Sara which we didn't even know about for two years, Gibbs has had some rolls in the hay but he's never seemed affected by them much, Marisol was more a plot device than a girlfriend/wife).

WORD. Wordy Mc-Fucking-Word. When I saw the ad for Bride Wars I wanted to hurl something through the TV.

And yay, finally an excuse to use this icon :P

Oooh, I LOVE that icon. That says it all. I would add to #8: without love *and children* you are nothing. Gah.

Over the last few years I've been watching fewer and fewer shows on TV; and now they've cancelled Stargate Atlantis, too - it's 100th, and last, episode was broadcast this week.

I hate reality shows, and frilly stuff - I've always been a bit of a tomboy. I can think of a lot of shows in the past which had good female characters... even it they were part of an ensemble cast, but the current crop of helpless females make me want to puke!
