This morning walking to work I saw a poster for the upcoming movie
Confessions of a Shopaholic. This type of film, in turn with movies like the recent
Bride Wars bug the SHIT outta me.
Where is the Wonder Woman movie? Where are the Aliens with a kick-ass, protective Sigourney Weaver or the Terminator 2s with a seriously pumped-up and in charge Linda Hamilton? Where are the movies with women we can actually look up to, not fashion-obsessed, man-chasing, vapid Hollywood caricatures?
And for that matter, where are the Buffys or the Xenas or the Scullys, or any type of television drama (not necessarily sci-fi or genre TV) that has strong female role models that I'd love to be able to show my 5-year-old niece one day?
Maybe The Ghost Whisperer? I dislike Jennifer Love-Hewitt. Or Medium? I suppose. I liked the first season but didn't keep up with it. I know there's the Sarah Connor Chronicles, too. But that's it. EDIT: I forgot Glenn Close in Damages.
I know there are some good female roles on ensemble dramas, but I'm not talking about those. As much as Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, and other women rock on Battlestar Galactica, it's still an ensemble show.
The airwaves are inundated with stupid reality dating shows where women debase themselves for a chance to get on TV and hang out with some half-celebrity. Or even worse, the exploitative Bad Girls Club or Bridezillas or any of those reality shows that make me cringe when I see a commercial for them.
The way Hollywood makes movies and TV reminds me of the way toy companies make toys for girls. Pink and frilly, with little miniature cooking sets or vacuums. In Hollywood's case it's movies that are empty and soulless, with lots of eye candy, bright fashion, and getting the man at the end. That can't be what America wants to see all the time, is it?
I guess I'm in a mood this morning. That damn poster really pissed me off.
