This weird looking device here is known as the
SlingBox. What it does is it streams any video device you have over the internet for you to play/retrieve via their special video player program, the SlingPlayer. It's not a portable video player or TV-recording program. It basically connects to your internet modem/router via an ethernet cable, connects to your Television/Media Device (I think DVD players works too), and then streams its current contents over the internet specifically to you. This means that if I had managed to grab hold of this device and connect it to my house Television, I would be able to watch Singaporean television right now (and actually see for myself what's the big deal about SG Idol). You can actually use the SlingPlayer program to control your television and switch channels and all.
On top of being available for PCs, SlingMedia (the company behind the SlingBox) also sells a Windows Mobile version of the SlingPlayer for your PDA. So this is a great new way to have 'portable' television if you have unlimited 3G data usage or if you have a lot of nice wifi-points to connect to. However, the company stupidly and irritatingly does not offer the mobile version as part of the bundle of your SlingBox, instead having you to pay USD$29.90 for it. Ugh.
The product sounds really cool. Would be a nice device to own. Too bad they only have it in US at the moment. If you want to see the concept on video and being reviewed, there is this great video review at
