I wanted to thank you for all the birthday wishes ! Reading a "happy birthday" always makes my day better since I'm not a big fan of my own birthdays. We had planned a girls day out with my Mom and sisters which was really fun and made me forget it was my birthday.
Birthday presents to myself !
As a surprise birthday present, my Mom got me a ticket for the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare directed by Sam Mendes which is currently playing in Paris (until today actually). It was just brilliant ! I thought the staging was really interesting, bright and personal. It was original but not too original.
I can't help to write a few words about The Vampire Diaries ! :
THIS WAS THE BEST EPISODE EVER ! Ok, I probably say that every week but we reached some kind of step this week. I have to confess that I've been rewatching the dance scene over and over again. Both actors played it perfectly. I particularly love how Damon sneaks in the crowd to join Elena when he realises Stefan is not there. It was a very good idea to put the slow music they picked for that scene. Both actors were smiling at different moments, it was perfect ! The very last scene was also priceless. The writers are teasing us.
I still love what's going on with Stefan ! It doesn't get old. I wonder where that's going, though. Paul Wesley is very talented. It's getting obvious now that he's on the dark side !
I love Alaric and I don't really have anything else to say on that topic.
I'm not forgetting the 30 days meme !
Day 04 : Your favorite book
With my favourite moment/thing from each one of them maybe ? Because I've already done the favourite quote thing for most of them !
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath : That's going to sound weird to those who haven't read it but the last time I read it (a few weeks ago), I realised I really liked all the scenes that take place at the hospital. I can't say why though. I thought the atmosphere was really fascinating.
East of Eden by John Steinbeck : I realised I wanted to reread it because I don't remember well enough the moment when Adam marries Kate until she leaves him and the twins. I remember that was really great.
In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust : Since I have a thing for the character of le Baron de Charlus, I particularly loved his entrance in the book. The narrator sees him on a beach at Balbec and wonders who that man is. I remember that I was really excited about Charlus' first appearance. It reached my expectations. I remember where I was when I read it (before going to sleep, in my bed).
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger : Maybe the moment Holden visits his history teacher at the beginning ? But then again, I love every single word and comma of that book.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen : When you think of it, Mr Darcy is the prototype of about 75% male characters on TV, in films, in books today ! It's rather amazing. I don't think I'm mistaken if I say Jane Austen created something there.
The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald : The moment that stuck with me over the years (I really have to read it again soon !) is the moment when Nick meets and talks to Gatsby for the first time at the party and doesn't recognize who he is. I thought that was brilliant.
If I could pick more I would go with Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, Extremely Loud and incredibly close by Jonathan Safran Foer among others.
