In the dark backward and abysm of time

I wanted to thank you for all the birthday wishes ! Reading a "happy birthday" always makes my day better since I'm not a big fan of my own birthdays. We had planned a girls day out with my Mom and sisters which was really fun and made me forget it was my birthday.

I don't celebrate birthdays so sorry I couldn't wish you one or send you anything, but I did notice it was your birthday the other day and was hoping you had a nice day :) I'll send you a present another time of the year <3

If you don't mind my asking, why don't you celebrate birthdays anymore ?
Thanks Ashley !

Well actually I've never 'celebrated' my birthday before. My family started studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses when I was 2, so if I ever had a birthday party, I would have been really little. And then as I got older and understood the reasons from the Bible why things like holidays and birthdays might not be appropriate to celebrate if you wanted to be a student of the Bible, it became my own decision. The reasoning is because there are only two notations of birthday celebrations in the Bible at Genesis 40:20-22 and Mark chapter 6, and both of those were by people who didn't believe in God. In addition to that, early Christians, when they were closer to the original teachings and hadn't melded with pagan religions in order to be more universally acceptable, didn't celebrate birthdays. When some Christians started celebrating birthdays some of the rituals involved were of pagan origin, so I just don't think that if I want to live my life as acceptable to God, I can't participate in things that might be offensive to him. So ( ... )

I actually tried to find the explanation earlier today but thank you, your answer is much clearer ! I had heard about a few of Jehovah's Witnesses' beliefs but I didn't know about the birthdays. :)

Is that a macbook pro? Jeeeaalous :o)

I am glad your birthday went alright. I know what you mean about being anxious. I kind of want the special attention but then once I get it I'm all 'leave me alone.' Strange, no?

The Tempest! Was it modern dress or period; detailed sets, or any sets at all? Just curious.

I reread Gatsby last month: you were/are right about it (and the rest of your book selections!)

Alllsssoo, late but: watch your post. I'll say no more.

It's funny that you're asking because my father told me that the "metal macbooks" had been upgraded to MacBook Pro recently. I was sceptical because the last time I was at the Apple Store (a.k.a. heaven) I didn't notice that change. They were still selling metal MacBooks. Long story short, your question led me to check their website and I realised my Dad was true ! From what I can see metal Macbooks don't longer exist. lol Emily I hope that's what you were implying by the way ! Otherwise you must be bored to death ! So, nope, this is my good old Macbook. That was his first birthday by the way since I got it for my 20th birthday. I'm glad to see he's still alive and only was incident (you might remember) has been deplored so far. My friend (cf. visit to the Apple Store) is buying a MacBook pro, though. I'm jealous ( ... )

My brother asked me yesterday, quite randomly, if I was going to get a new macbook and the very question made me want a new one, but I really don't need a new one quite yet, you know? I think he only asked because he wanted my old one :o)

That exhibit does sound intriguing, actually. I studied literature of prisons last semester, and wrote a big paper on civil disobedience (focusing on Thoreau, Martin Luther King Jr, and Gandhi).

2nd comment or how could my answer get any longer reveparisien April 27 2010, 22:29:49 UTC
I forgot to answer about the play !!
The costumes : that was interesting. Since you know it takes place on an island, it wasn't really that obvious. Miranda was wearing a very simple white dress sort of draped around her. Not very traditional for the time. All the men expect for Prospero were wearing military uniforms I would say. Prospero was wearing something a bit more original. He had a cape that he would put on when using his magic. Also ! I was about to forget. Ariel was wearing a black suit with a white shirt. So really, my answer should be : it was modern dress. (Also : I thought Ariel was a woman ! I felt so stupid when I understood. According to Wikipedia it can be considered ambiguous, though !).

There were detailed sets. How can I put this... On the ground there was sand and then water in the background. Chairs had been put there in the water (it was only a few centimeters of water really) so that the "lost" characters from the ship (Alonso, Sebastian, etc) could sit still (like statues almost) when Miranda, Prospero and ( ... )
