Dead End

Argh…. So long since I’ve done a journal. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but for the past few days each one of these has been a nightmare to complete. Nothing important going on in my own life right now, and I think I’ve kinda backed myself into a corner as far as creative writing is concerned, since I’m hesitant to try anything too experimental as I know people are reading this. Note: I’m not saying that I mind the fact that this journal is accessible to everyone - just that I feel weird about posting stuff that’s only brainstorming or notes on future stories. So if you’re just a casual reader of my journal, you might not be too interested in the following, which is just a collection of ideas on my next short story.

The Memory (tentative title)

The story takes place in the very near future, and will probably not mention the exact year. In fact, most likely the only technological advancement that I’ll write about is a machine that can copy memories from one person to the next. The two main characters are a pair of high school friends reminiscing sometime around graduation. Luke, the protagonist, is still a little bit jealous that Nate took a girl he had a crush on for most of high school to a dance years ago. Nothing ever happened between them, but Luke is envious over this since he never had the courage to ask Marine himself, so he makes Nate an offer: two hundred dollars for a copy of his memory of the night of the dance.
That’s the setup for my story, but I’m still not totally sure of what direction it will take after the introduction. One thing I’ve considered is having Luke ask Nate to also erase his own memory of going to the dance with Marine, so that he’ll be the only one with the memory. My other idea is that as Luke “remembers” the dance, he’ll be a little disturbed whenever Nate does something that would be uncharacteristic of his own personality. My biggest problem right now is that I’m not sure what exactly the theme of my story is. That we are the sum of our memories, and that by owning a piece of Nate’s past, Luke instinctively becomes more like Nate? That the line between this fake memory and his real memories will start to blur, leading him to question something else in his life? Or experiencing the memory will cause Luke to see both Nate and Marine in a new light? Hopefully I’ll have some new ideas tomorrow to share about where the story is going.

I’m out.
