I'm afraid that is a gross misconception about feminists. there are some feminists who tend to seem like man-haters or that seem to want "special rights" -- these feminists typically belong to the Second Wave of feminism, and are usually in the age group your teacher belongs to. most Third Wave and neo-feminists are easygoing and very, very equal-minded, often feminine, intelligent women (and men, too). I'm sure you know this, but man, as a feminist, it kind of freaks me out when people start railing on how feminism is man-hating and all that. there's such a horrible misconception out there about feminism, and I just want to do my part to make it a little more clear...
granted, your teacher does seem like a second-wave bitch.
I completely understand, that is why I made it a point to say the feminism I am exposed to, because I know there are ones out there that mean good, but the ones I know seem to not get it at all; like ones at UCI I guess.
Oh and also, my main concern was that feminism has no place in film classes, and this teacher brings it into both, so that sorta' makes me angry. Like "grrr."
I support feminism, but I detach the legitimate concern about equal rights and gendered hierarchies from the more radical, off-the-wall shit. (Gendered cyborgs? What the fuck is that shit?) Women are supposedly guaranteed equal treatment under the law, but the reality is generally anything but that. I support feminism because it does attack the entrenched perceptions of male supremacy in society, the media, and everyday life. However, my support stops when I, a white, straight, middle-class guy, am perceived as an enemy because of my status, because that seems antithetical to the premise of equality and subverting hierarchies. But yeah- your teacher sounds like less of a feminist and more of a man-hater. Sorry.
p.s. I'm coming to your house and kidnapping you for a skate session sometime this weekend.
Yeah I agree, I think it's just the general feminism at UCI seems to be the wrong kind of feminism that I am exposed to. And yes, we NEED to skate this weekend, among many other things.
i agree with you in full. my writing teacher got mad at me for making a "he" generalization. because i get so fed up doing the "if a person does ____, he/she ______ and it affects his/her _____" so i used "he" and "his" and what not, because as i have learned, that is a grammatically correct way of doing it. and my teacher was like "well what about the women" and i was like "fuck you...wait nobody wants to cuz youre boring"
when you take the film history series, you'll find that the favorite topics of the film profs are 1) representations of the city, 2) representation of women, and 3) gender identity. might have to do something with all of the profs in the dept being of the dating same sex category.
Haha, yeah that would make sense, but this Prof. Lui, according to Charlotte she's pretty over the top. And feminist stuff fits sometimes, but she tries to basically turn the class into woman studies or something, ech.
