"Patience has its limits. Take it too far and it's cowardice." - George Jackson

Remus Lupin has spent a great deal of his life waiting. He waits for people to approach him. He waits for someone to invent a cure for lycanthropy. He waits for society to get a clue and accept or at least tolerate him. He waits for something to go right for him for a change.

He acts just often enough to trick people into thinking that he's strong and courageous in the face of the poor hand life has dealt him. That he actually belonged in Gryffindor instead of being sorted there because he'd practically begged the Hat after seeing the charismatic boy who'd won him over on the Hogwarts Express sorted there.

But Remus knows the truth. His patience has very little to do with any kind of inner strength or goodness, like people believe. Remus knows it's really only cowardice. He is afraid, terrified down to his very core, of being found out, of being known, of being hated and of being blamed.
