Is there a situation when it is appropriate to be unkind?

There are, of course, plenty of situations when it is appropriate to be unkind. I think you will find that unkindness tends to eventually become kindness in those types of situations, though. When a person thinks ahead and acts in the best interests of the many instead of the few, his or her actions aren't always seen as pleasant or kind or even necessary. And it's certainly no easy task, being aware of the difference and making the right choices, especially when others don't appreciate it. But it would be far worse to allow bad things to happen in the long run just because something feels better right at the moment, or benefits only those who are closest to you. Instant gratification can be a great deal of fun but it has a tendency to lead to many more long-term problems than exercising a bit of temperance and restraint does.
