Does therapy work?

Therapy can work. The trouble is, the person who is supposed to benefit from the therapy needs to have the desire for it to work. Most people do not actually have any such desire. To be truly self-aware and to fix their problems, things must change. Change is uncomfortable and people dislike it. It becomes even more difficult when the thing that needs to be changed is one's own behavior. Even negative qualities of one's personality are hard to want to change because they are still what makes one who one is. Even when one wants to change who or what one is, it is not easy. Everyone expects everybody else to change but nobody likes to be the one who is actually asked to alter his or her perspective or actions.

That all sounds horribly impersonal and detached and clinical. The fact of the matter is, talking about my problems has never really helped me. It is true that I have never sought truly professional help but I have had a very wise confidante or two over the years and I have never been able to overcome anything that anybody has seen as an issue. However, I have seen it truly work for others and even if it does not help, I do not think talking can really hurt.
